A lot of the old Parallax folks are looking to re-make Descent with modern tech for the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. All six degrees of freedom are coming back!

From their FAQ:
Didn't you guys already do a Kickstarter for Descent: Underground?

Nope -- that’s not us. Descent: Underground is being created by a different group of developers (with experience in space games like Wing Commander and Star Citizen) who have licensed the name from Interplay and are creating a new game with a different focus. We’ve talked to them a couple times and they seem pretty cool. Overload and Descent: Underground are completely different games from different groups of people, but we all love 6-degree-of-freedom shooters.
It's been a long time since I played Descent. Still had a Logitech Wingman Extreme back then.. Ah, the times. Nowadays it would be mouse and keyboard for me. How was Descent Underground? Did anyone here play it?

As you can see from my links above, it's still in early access and far from finished. Steam EA reviews are 82% positive at 164 reviews (= "Very Positive"). I have actually backed the game at $30 and have beta (early) access but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. One of these days .

If anyone wants to follow or learn more about this project, I'd recommend their YT channel. Wingman's Hangar is a pretty fun and informative show. It was the best part of early Star Citizen before Eric "Wingman" Peterson got the boot and founded Descendent Studios with several other ex-CIG (ex-Origin) guys.

I get the feeling that Descent: Underground is much more focused on multi-player combat but they do mention a campaign in the KS - they could just be holding back on that in early access.

Whatever the case, I'm happy to see Descent suddenly coming back to life!

I got Descent: Underground as part of a bundle a few months back, but I haven't installed it yet. It's my understanding that there's no single-player campaign implemented yet.

*Edit* Here's a recent response from one of the devs when asked about the single-player campaign.

We are working on that now, but that will not be in Early Access, that is our big launch event. We may release like a tease at some point, but since anything about SP would be a spoiler, we will keep working on it - and be a little less talky about it.

That is true but they have at least added a 'Campaign' button to the menu recently .
It's a de(s)scent (mwaahaa) foundation so far by the way. I've flown around the levels a bit and it absolutely has that 6DOF Descent feel. It definitely has the potential to turn into a very worthy spiritual successor but only time will tell.

Lookie here for the main menu campaign option…
