Default Going back to finish side quest.

June 1st, 2016, 08:03
The last part of Kingdom of Amalur I just pushed through to finish off the main quest and have done this with a few other games.

I found not a day later I was back in the game trying to finish off all the quest I hadn't finished. Is there something wrong with me that I just can't put it down because I know there are things incomplete?

Is there anyone else here that is like me and just has to try to finish every little thing even if it has zero impact on the game?

You're probably a little OCD, but that's a very common thing among gamers. I'm that way myself with a lot of games, but I try to ignore those compulsions in larger RPGs because of how time consuming it can become.

Whether or not it has an impact on the game is irrelevant. Ask yourself if you're really enjoying those extra quests. If you find that you're only doing them because of the compulsion to finish them, and you're not enjoying them, uninstall the game and move on.

I usually try to finish as much as I possibly can before the game fatigue sets in. If I finish a game though, I will never go back to finish side quests.

So, yeah, there's something wrong with you. (Kidding!)

I tend to complete every side quest, and I truly hate having side quests left in my log when I finish a game. It's even become such an issue for me that I no longer pick up quests that I know are bugged and either can't be completed or won't be removed from the log when completed.

In more massive games, like MMOs (+ Skyrim and a few others), I complete the game region by region, so I always know where I've completed 100% and where I haven't even started. For example if it only takes 4 out of 5 zones in an MMO to reach max level, I will only pick up the starting quest for the 5th zone, and then do nothing with it until I feel ready to do it 100%.

Well, if the game is good, I want to enjoy all it has to offer. But that happens very rarely, so most of the time I'd ignore some side quests if they are not interesting or fun.

I'm in the middle of this game, and I can assure you, your urge to finish all quests is absolutely normal.

I used to be like this as well but just don't have the time so I pick and choose now days.

I used do what Maylander said above but I don't like this any more since it does not feel very "organic" and feels very gamey! I have not completely kicked the habitat though since it can rears its ugly head all the time

I didn't think much of Kingdoms of Amalur to be honest, so I was quite happy to see its conclusion rather than do x amount of quests merely for the sake of it.

I find it helps to role-play your character and imagine whether it makes much sense for them individually to be so comprehensive about quest completion.

In my case, I investigated one of the larger quest lines for mages (as I played one) at the end of the game, then left a good proportion of the rest of the content well alone.

I know some players can't do this, but I never force myself to complete quests if I'm not enjoying it or it simply doesn't feel right for my character. Role-playing is king after all.

So did you bring back brother what's-his-name book collection, eh?
Seriously Celtic, you'll burn yourself out this way. Avoid notice boards and focus on faction quests and main storyline.

I also did all the side quests in KoAR, but I was more anal IIRC, I did them all before I finished the main quest. There was one bugged quest that remained in the log at the end.

The sheer potential lost in this game staggers me to this day. Such talent on board, and imo, a very mediocre product. This is a game I'll never ever replay

I'll replay Reckoning some day. I thought it was really good.

I ended up playing 250 hours or so and doing most side quests, including the absolutely STELLAR DLC, The Legend of Dead Kel. One of the best add-on DLCs in an RPG I've ever played. It's great content.

But yeah, 250+ hours and didn't even make it to the final 2 regions! The game is huge.

Fluent,
I am in the same position as you-some 200 + hours in amular and still not compete. Yet when I do go back to it from time to time (on my ps3) I really enjoy chipping away at it again. I love to speed of the combat and the world of warcraft look. I suppose I feel a need to complete, but to actually complete, well,it takes a very long time, but thats ok for me!

Depending on the game and how I'm feeling sometimes I like to try and do things one at a time. You talk to someone, get a quest and then focus on completing it before getting another. Feels kind of more organic that way. One of my pet peev's is quests being automatically added, cluttering up a journal, this can be helped by the journal/quest log design but I must be a bit OCD too as a find a cluttered quest log rather irksome.

ps - I'm in the enjoyed KoA camp. It was a fun enough romp.

In past I was enjoying let parts unexplored, quests untouched, it was building the feeling the game had more and was still a wide world to explore.

At some points this behavior disappeared I suspect it's both age and CRPG general evolution.

And later since some years it took another form, keep stuff for a future replay. If the game isn't that good it was a fine decision to skip stuff, if the game is that good it was a fine decision to keep stuff for a replay.

DAI isn't a CRPG to play for those obsessed by completist play. I believe you need find your own rhythm for playing alternatively the different aspects and mix them as it match your fun, and play them only when it match your fun. For example, pure exploration and some sneaking to explore more, try find a way to reach a point of the map, try explore a part with horse rush, play a secondary quest that grab your curiosity, try solve a picture treasure when you have the mood to do it, dig a bit the relationships, focus on strategy map, dig a bit the hub and speak to various people and sometimes discover some cool stuff, focus a time on main story stuff, wonder a little bit about equipment and eventually a bit of crafting, decide find the shards in an area, focus a bit on designing your team building and eventually experiment new mixes, visit a bit shops to wonder if you can't get some useful stuff out of it, prepare and attempt a dragon killing, some more.

By mixing well those activities it avoid rather well the repetition feeling, and listening your current expectation instead of forcing yourself finish stuff you started can help a lot to struggle against the abuse of design variations to succeed full the huge areas. I quoted sometimes I gave up continue bother on some secondary quest and started play something and later have curiosity make finish the quest with a fair fun. Same for shards, sometimes totally ignore them, and sometimes have fun get them and find how reach each.

Huuu awful out of topic with that DAI blah blah, I don't think so, the game is rather special and fits rather well the thematic, completionist play or not completionist play.

Well I did finish off 19 or 20 more quest in that game but I find myself doing it with all games really. Though most of the time I try and finish them before I finish the main quest.

Glad I am not the only one that can't stand an open quest log.
