Default Total War: Warhammer - PixelDynamo Review

June 12th, 2016, 12:55
PixelDynamo reviews Total War: Warhammer and gives it an impressive score of 8.8.

Total War’s mechanics and the Warhammer setting complement one another beautifully, and Creative Assembly has mostly nailed the execution. Total War: Warhammer is the best representation of the Warhammer universe there has ever been in a video game, and the best entry in the Total War series for some time.

I know a few on the Watch have played Warhammer. How has it held up after a few weeks of playing? Are you happy you bought it? I am real close to buying it

I am a big Tital War fan and I played the Tabletop Warhammer a lot. I like Total War Warhammer but at the moment I would say wait for patches. There are technical issues that ruined my fun. My graphics are really bad even on ultra (and normaly I really don't care for graphics). There seems to be a problem with textures. And I'm not the only one. At the moment it is investigated by CA. I got a shock when I watched youtube videos and I thought this had to be two different games I had a lot of crashes too.
There are aspects I don't like. Some heroes are way too strong. Lv 30 Archaon alone! killed two of my fullstack Orkarmies! this was absolutly no fun. They were not high end armies but still.
The game got streamlined a lot (from older games), no more formations and active unitabilitys, simpler management aspect.
Two other aspects killed the game for me so that I will wait until patches arrive to play again. The battles a way too fast. Big battles are really hard to handle because of that. I really don't like that. And there is annoying Agentspam like in Rome 2. They already commented that they will patch this.
But they got the warhammerfeeling right, the Ai is improved and sometimes even a challenge(but it happens too that the ai army just stays on the spot and does nothing until the player approaches in battles) and the campaign is fun and can be quite hard.
So wait for patches, they will fix a lot of the problems and then the game will be fun.

I love it. I haven't fallen victim to any bugs yet. It is my go-to game on my breaks. Graphics are gorgeous on my 7-year-old system with a gtx960. Performance is quick and never slows down, even in large battles.
First campaign, playing Empire, currently getting ganged from three sides by greenskins, vampires, and chaos. Have some reasonably strong and dependable, though faltering allies (watching allied Dwarven passes fall to a massive Waaaagggghhh is terrible and wonderful to behold). Tough without savespamming, even on Normal, though I imagine TW vets already know how to take advantage of any AI shortcomings. Tons of bang for your buck with this title.
Overworld design is gorgeous and expertly hand-crafted. The natural-feeling quest design perfectly compliments the grand-scale strategic campaign gameplay.
Day 1 purchase for me. NO RAGRETS

There are no formations? That's sad to hear.

Anyway, I'm holding off for a GOTY edition or a very good sale on this one.
