ebook reader

Hey all you avid readers out there, I was wondering if anyone here has an e book reader. I am thinking of buying a Kindle. Would anyone recommend a tablet over and e book reader? Just wondering? Thanks!

Get Kindle.
I don't have it but a friend does so I tasted it.
Not sure why but reading anything on tablet (or phone) gets my eyes irritated after a while and I just have to stop. On Kindle I didn't have such problems, I'm suspecting bad screen refresh rate on tablets, a problem Kindle can't have due to different technology.
If you're planning not to read just plain textbooks, but would like to enjoy comics too in all their beauty, I suggest waiting a while because color ink Kindle was rumored to appear at end of this year. I know tablets could cover for this, but when it comes to comics, tablets with their unprecise screen and flicker just suck.

What joxer said. Also:
Kindle Paperwhite works very well for bedtime reading with the lights turned off.

Also I prefer ebook readers over tablets since ebook readers are so easy on my eye. I can't read on tables for more than an hour straight before my eyes start to get dry up.

I used to use ebook readers, but I switched to tablet and never going back. First, I don't need two devices when I travel. Second, I don't need the lights on or some addendum with light, tablets have their own light. I get no fatigue from reading on a tablet, at all. One advantage of ebook readers is their extended battery life, but tablets last for like 8 hours on a charge so unless I'm going to like China or Australia, it lasts enough for any trip just the same. I'm also not tied to the device's reader, I can use any reader app I want in a tablet (personally I use the Nook reader app). When I want a little rest from reading, I just touch 'home' and watch a video, movie, browse the web, etc. right there, don't have to struggle to switch devices.

I have the Kindle Paperwhite also, and recommend it. It is a lot easier to read on than a tablet is, plus, as someone else already indicated, it has great battery life.
I don't mind reading on a tablet that much (I get no fatigue or whatsoever), but I do find the Kindle more comfortable.

I just use my phone. I prefer to have everything on one device than have multiple. I use the Aldiko Reader and it works fine for me.

Thanks everyone for the quick reply. I think the e reader has the vote. As I am not much of a comic person, the Kindle Paperwhite sounds like a good option. Brilliant! Thanks all. Nice video Arhu (poor dick!).

One thing, the kindle paperwhite etc. are small form factor. So they are easy to carry but very few words per page. Also my partner listens to audible books as well as reads so for her a tablet was best option.

Thanks for the good advice from y'all. I bought an paperwhite kindle in the end and I am loving it. I wish I had bought one sooner. Highly recommended.

Late to the party, here's my 2 coppers… Wife and I have used two models of Kobo for the last 6 years. Currently on a Kobo Glo. Went with Kobo because the Kindle library wasn't that good here in Oz back in 2010 and I didn't want to be locked into an eco system. Very happy with them. Turn it off when not reading, disable wifi, battery lasts for weeks. I use Calibre to manage my library as the majority of my 1800 books have been free and I like the direct control of the file metadata (I think you can use calibre with a Kindle??).
Agree e-books are great. They're up there with iPods as my favourite tech gadgets from the last little while for me. We got our first ones just prior to going on a long overseas trip, god how I remember lugging around hard covers or trade paperbacks. Tablets are good but I love the battery life you get out of the reader plus they're lighter making them easier to hold for long periods.

I just use my phone. I find I read more when I have 5 minutes here and there, since my phone is always on me. Works best if you have a screen 5" or larger. I find it's much easier to read when using night mode lighting, to cut out the "blue" glare, or whatever they call it.

I am definitely in the Kindle (or nook or Kobo - something with an E-Ink screen) - I know that the science is sketchy still at this point, but I definitely find that after staring at a LCD all day, moving to a Kindle helps to reduce further eye strain. That and the battery life is massive, the device itself is trivially small and light, and with the Paperwhite illumination you can read anywhere.

I love reading the old fashioned way, no electric reading for me. It is something special to hold a book. *prepares to dodge random dinosaur comments*

While I prefer a 'real' book, I have found my Kindle Oasis to be perfect for travelling PLUS I have been able to obtain a great many 'old' novels which have been out of print for years and several 'golden age' bundles for less than a dollar. It's a marvellous convenience!!

So I don't see reading 'real' books as a dinosaur thing at all … since you are physically holding a book and otherwise interact with it directly, I totally get that appeal.
But for me, digital works - I finished one book this weekend as we were away and assumed I would start a specific new one, but ended up not going with that, or my next pick, before settling into the new 'Anatomy of a Song' by Marc Myers. Physically I would have had to carry 5 books to do that, instead of a single little Kindle.

I would not get an ereader; but rather an 8 inch tablet. While the e-reader has a few advantages (1/2 the price; better battery life; and some find them easier to read) the tablet wins in flexibilty. You can find a good 8 inch tablet for $200 esp during black friday/cyber monday period - ok $200 is not the normal price but sale price for top of the line 8 incher. Can't recommend one because it depends on your taste (ios vs andriod vs sd slot vs $$).
