Are you sure it's the graphics?

You're forgetting another major player: poorer PC gamers. There's lots of folks out there with weaker and/or older cards that want to play games but haven't got the cash for new hardware.

VR will certainly be the future but, with today's pixel count and graphics power, it's still pretty much in the novelty stage. But there's a place in between: stereoscopic 3D. You don't get the full surround but you sure do get the life-like 3D.

It doesn't work with all titles but it certainly works with several. Of course, it's also not terribly interesting for all games. It's hardly a big deal in XCom, it's only good for a joke in South Park, but in Witcher 3?? Ooooo!

I suppose ideally we'd see more PC games that can run fine on relatively low end hardware so that any poor gamer or kid with a basic Dell, Gateway, or whatever can play them, but still take advantage of higher end GPUs when you crank the settings up to ultra.

But I don't know how feasible that actually is… It's similar to wanting RPG developers to put lots of branching paths and secrets in their games. While it would be amazing for those of us who like explore every nook and cranny and have RPGs with C&C and replay value, most developers probably feel they can't justify investing many man hours creating content few players will even see.

Ideally PC hardware would be so cheap anyone would be able to buy a decent machine without buying basic Dell junk.
Another thing ideally would be a new PC architecture, the hassle with screws and wires should have been a thing of past a decade ago if not before.

But we live in a world where nothing is ideal, a person will buy a bloody $1000 worth phone but when it comes to PC then they buy the cheapest possible and expect it to run TW3 on ultra.

The topic is PC graphics stagnation, it is not related to no stone unturned design. Not sure what I wrote before but I don't think graphics on PC stagnates. IMO some publishers artificially bring it down so console owners don't feel "cheated".

I noticed that games aren't anywhere as demanding anymore and I'm happy about it. Otherwise by now my PC would be unable to play modern games (it's 7 years old). For me a new PC is a huge purchase, they're expensive here. So I hope the situation continues to be like this.

Devs should make their games more scalable, that would solve the issue. Push for best (with best hardware) and if the gamer hasn't got that best hardware just scale down to cater him. Some games do this quite well and some other fail on all levels.

Its likely to stay that way as long people are playing mainstream games on consoles. The AAA games are designed for the PS4 and xbox first , even a low end PC for 500$ will easily outclass the obsolete console hardware.
VR games, especially those two new games developped by valve may requires more, but i dont believe in VR that much, the headset are giving everyone nausea after 15 min of play.
The other pc games are indies like neo scavenger, underail, requiring nothing, or strategy games like paradox EU4 requiring almost nothing at all.
Thats a good thing i am not wasting cash on this anymore, more money on heatlhier stuff , like more ammo , gold and more canned food for my shelter.

Yeah, money is an issue for many with gaming PCs, including myself. I have a decent gaming PC but they don't last very long. A year and a half later and you'll likely have problems running some games on Ultra @ 60 fps.

But, I end up playing mostly indie RPGs and old games anyway, so it doesn't matter much. It is nice having a decent PC in general if you can save up or something. Even if you just want to play old games with a lot of mods @ 60 fps (Morrowind, Oblivion, etc..)

I'm not interested in the VR stuff, so if that is the future of gaming, guess I'll be playing all the classics when that happens. Wearing some sort of bulky 3D face mask thing…um…no. 3D has always seemed like an annoying gimmick to me, for example, I hate 3D movies, so I always go to the non-3D showings of movies, which they thankfully provide in some of the bigger theater chains.

If they eventually get to a point where the technology is "true" virtual reality, where the 3D is like, as good as in the Matrix films, then I will become super interested…but that is probably a very long way off in the future…

I'm actually very interested in VR, at least for the experience of an Elder Scrolls game, or even Elminage Gothic or other first-person RPGs. It's not going to replace my PC in any way, shape or form, but it could be a neat thing to play here and there.

If they manage to make a VR experience that even lets you play isometric RPGs, with the ability to see your keyboard and what not when needed directly in the VR experience, well, then I might play every RPG that way.

I wonder if everyone that's not interested in VR has tried it. I had the same thoughts before I tried it. I don't want a big bulky headset, headphone, wires etc.

Then I went to my brothers and tried it and 10 minutes in I'd forgotten I had all that stuff on as I was so immersed in the game and environment. Looking all around you and seeing a world is so different than just seeing one on a screen. When a person or object starts moving toward you you instinctively lean back when it gets close. A full guy standing in your face yelling and pointing is a whole new experience that is impossible to get on a screen.

I was driving in a car getting shot at from behind so I opened the door with my hand as you would a real door, stuck my head out looked directly behind me pointed my gun and started shooting. Even just sitting at a desk going through the drawers was amazing. The VR tricks your brain and it really felt like I was opening drawers.

I understand people will try it and not like it but it's definitely something you need to try first hand to experience. Just hearing about it or watching videos, or watching someone do it live doesn't even give a tiny bit of what it's like to actually experience.

The thought of exploring a game like skyrim in VR blows my mind. The only caveat I could see is playing for hours might get tiresome but it's definitely like nothing I've ever experienced and something I think every gamer should at least try once.

Oh, and 3-d is not even close. Not even in the same realm or discussion as VR.
