Ys VIII on PC
August 29th, 2017, 18:30
Sorry, but wccftech is guilty I'm opening this thread.
The game will appear on PC at sept. 12th (in 2 weeks):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/57…imosa_of_DANA/

But I was like
seeing Wccftech just made a playstation review and slapped 9.5/10 on that game:
http://wccftech.com/review/ys-viii-l…ful-adventure/
I mean… Is giving a score this high even possible on that rubbish platform? Or is the game that good to deserve it?

I'm a little leery of that score and I'm generally a fan of the Ys series.
But why would the platform have any effect on it?

The score is mostly explained by the reviewer not being a fan of the YS series but some episodes in it. This episode represents the apex of a formula according to the reviewer.

Taken from italian EG review (with googletranslate ofc, I don't speak that language):

Nice butt? Yea… That's outdated graphics. They could have kept the style intact and still have superb visuals, but they dumbed graphics down because whatever Nintendo garbage or clone gadgetery this game will also appear on.
I guess I find it hard to accept a game being described as nearmasterpiece where something, in the example above it's visuals, are not even close to some high level.
Beside that, reviewers shouldn't care about games' budget in their score. They're not writing an spreadsheet ROI analysis for some CEO and noone else. At least I hope they don't.

Comparing Ys VIII to titles like The Witcher 3 or Horizon Zero Dawn is obviously impetuous and definitely unfair. The budget of this production is not comparable to that of this yet another Falcom production, which however has its dignity and deserves to be played by those who love this series and follow it from the beginning.Sorry but IMO it's not unfair. An example:

So a game cannot be a "near-masterpiece" unless it has the most cutting edge graphics around???? I've heard of graphics whores, but you really take the cake, joxer…

But PST wasn't made in 2016. If completley the same PST was made today, I could never call it a masterpiece. I'd most probably write about it as a great nostalgic retro game.
What I'm saying is a masterpiece is produced by a master in some craft at certain point of history. On the screenshot I've attached, sorry, I see only amateurism.
Any masterpiece needs to have a flaw. But if horrible hair will be that flaw, you shouldn't massacre all ingame graphics too. Seems Ys 8 did exactly that.
I never hide the fact I am a graphics whore. It doesn't mean I buy and play only eyecandy games, it's far from truth. I refuse to buy games that are visually stunning where everything else is pathetic. Style does matter. But the variety of content matters even more. Style over substance was always something I couldn't stand.
Means, if you ever hear I bought Order 1886, check through your window, it's doomsday.
