I'm not really a fan of whimsy in my RPG's, I prefer them a bit grittier but it's all done with a deft touch such that I'm not minding.

Very good news, and quite surprising. Few of my friends actually play it yet; they're all waiting for some patching or enhanced edition.

I still didn't buy it, even though I plan to play it. I just need to finish few games from backlog first

lol, Skyrim had over 280,000 concurrent users during release week. Somebody should do a little thinking/research before making click bait. 280,000 is much, much greater than 85,000. I will trade $85,000 with anyone who will give me 280k in return. Any takers?
BTW, Skyrim isn't number one by any means. It was beaten by GTA 5. Skyrim doesn't have a multiplayer mode though, so the comparison wouldn't work for Sin2 anyway because it isn't a single-player only crpg.
For the Skyrim haters, here is an article posting it's record being broken:

GTA 5 is overhyped and overrated mediocre garbage.
Why are people buying that bullshit dunno, but I'm also the one who believed it's a musthave game yet got utterly disappointed.
What GTA5 had was superefficient PR machine behind it. I didn't play any of GTA games before and mark my words, I won't buy any upcoming GTA game ever after this rubbish.
And I agree with you on game type remarks. DOS2 has coop/multiplayer mode. Additionally, it's not openworld really (no return to previous area), it's turnbased and not first person. Too much different from Skyrim.
Those two shouldn't be compared. Just like Skyrim shouldn't be compared with Rockstar's moronic story based racing game. We can see numbers, but those numbers don't mean much.

I agree. In fact, I find comparisons to any games that aren't release at/near the same time to be useless. Why compare? I'm gonna buy both regardless if they're in my genre(s). If Witcher 3/Skyrim/ and DOS2 all released on the same day. I'd buy Skyrim first, but I'd buy Witcher 3 and DOS2 also. Just maybe not Day 1.
I wouldn't compare Sin to Skyrim anyway. I'd compare it to King's Bounty for feel or another squad tactics type game for how it plays, maybe Blackguards? I don't play these typically, but Sin has more role-playing options than those.

No other "old-school" RPG released in the last several years (probably ever) even comes close to this 85K, Pillars (I think) is the highest but it's less than half.

There is another game to point at as simplified DOS2 because it's without object manipulation and etc, I know you don't want to hear it, but it's:

That's a big point too, you. Skyrim doesn't use Gog. However, Skyrim released on GFWL iirc so Steam wouldn't have those numbers either….or was that Oblivion that was on GFWL? Can't remember. I've slept since then. It really, really doesn't matter; especially if the guy's point was older-style tactical game making a splash where the big guys roam. In that example, Larian has a big success on their hands. Gog is just icing on the cake. I'd guess that Gog might have another 15% to the Steam numbers, so that puts them above 100,000.

It can't be a discussion about sales without crpgnut talking about Skyrim.

Good product to watch being streamed.
Even though the large 4 player groups did not survive the discipline required to play it.

Then again, isn't every game worth being streamed instead of played, in your opinion?

No. It cant be.
If even it is dismissed on this forum, design does exist. The consequences of design is that things fit usage better, that they are better used certain ways.
For a product to be quality material for streaming, being designed that way helps a great deal. It does not fall from the tree.
One area of design is difficult: streamers fall in several categories. One is the one (or few) product streamer. Streamers in this category usually know how to play, they multiply runs. For example, streamers who streamed BB fell in that category.
They are often less popular as streamers (except those who stream competitive material)
Another category is the multi product streamers. They usually complete once, maybe twice a product then move to another. They are more popular.
For marketing purposes, streamers do not want to appear as noobs, so they usually choose a higher difficulty level. They usually can not suffer to be helped out of struggling (which is refered as backseating)
It puts requirements on what a higher difficulty level: a difficulty that can be overcome on first try without prior knowledge of inner workings and that must allow a steady way of playing through the product. Products that can be played as they come. It is enough to just play.
This product fits the bill: streamers are playing on tactician (sometimes even on honour) You do not require prior experience to be able to play through on the highest difficulty and from some stage (once the escape is ensured), breeze through the content.
This product meets a urge from streamers because it is designed for that.
