Vampyr - NPCs don't come back
May 1st, 2018, 02:11
Gamingbolt reports that NPCs won't come back once you have ended their lives in Vampyr.
Vampyr, Dontnod’s upcoming vampire RPG, is going to make your actions in game count. For instance, while it lets you take the lives of NPCs, each of your actions have very real and meaningful consequence. If you kill an NPC in game, that’s it for them- they’re gone for the rest of the game, the game autosaves at that point, you can’t revert to an older game to get them back. In that regard, it works a lot like From Software’s Souls games.More information.

I was once interested in this game but it's slowly diminishing this year.

I really hope this game can shed some light on a fading genre, a great vampire game is difficult to find. Innovative decisions like this one could have tremendous impact and boost a mediocre game into an unforgettable one. I wish them all the very bestest luck!!!!!

Just look at their past two games Life is Strange and Remember me. Neither are RPGs.

I just want something that recaptures the atmosphere from V:TM-B. Not sure if Vampyr will be that game, but I can always hope.

Could be interesting, but this will not be a day-one for me.

So you only get one save "slot" in this game? Otherwise, how is this supposed to work? Plus, what's to stop you from backing up your saves anyway. Can't access the actual quotes that this article is based on because they are from a print magazine. Anyway, what's laid out in the article sounds…dumb.

There have been very few attempts at a vampire CRPG, and Bloodlines stands out because it was a great CRPG, period. Though I'm not a fan of action combat, the game integrated non-combat skills, backgrounds (or clans in this case) wonderfully and the hubs with their quests were some of the best level designs in any rpg I've played. Of course the game had its flaws with its terrible release bugs, and its "dungeons" which are full of mindless combat (including the last 20% of the game) aren't all that interesting, but for me the game is an example of what developers should aim for when developing a CRPG, namely memorable story, characters, atmosphere, locations, and quests with multiple approaches, and interesting exploration.

But I assume you can always start a new game, just with a different character profile. Of course you can back up and overwrite your saves if you really want to, so yeah this is pretty much a futile attempt to force players to live with the consequences of their choices & not save scum.

I'm expecting an above average game though, not some masterpiece.
Of course, I expected the same from Dark, but repopulating the same area you cleared just to pose as timewasting filler killed that game for me.

That the studio is taking on an RPG for the first time doesn't bother me. In fact, there's probably a lot to be said for starting out with smaller scope indie games before taking on that challenge. They've proved they are proper devs that can deliver. Whether this one turns out well, we shall see.

I was thinking about games that simply had vampires in them at all, which brought a huge number to mind. That number dwindles when you focus on those that had vampires as the protagonist, that's for certain. I'm not sure if any game in today's world could ever recapture the mood that was so special in Masquerade-Bloodlines, but I'd be pleased to be wrong.
Don't think I'll be giving this one a shot on day one either. I suspect this project will be a work in progress, even well after release.

Perhaps this is their solution for save scumming (of course I wonder if they implemented appropriate protection against save files being copied). Anyway I can't judge until i understand the context of the game; most rpg tend to be save/keep as often you want; but perhaps this is closer to a rogue like game where it makes sense to only allow a single save as you progress.
Having said taht if they only allow a single save as you progress the game best not crash - ever.

Just crash? What about gamestopper bugs that force you ro reload some hour or more old save because you've solved several quests after data got bugged?
Just no. Leave one_save/checkpoint for linear games without side content please. Or openworlds that reset completely on protagonist's death then respawn that same protagonist nearby. Aka for nonRPGs.

Nothing will prevent me save-scumming. I will use any devious means necessary.
