I also seen the high metacritic scores. Watched some YouTube footage. I can't see the appeal. Anyone played it much ?

I see it too.
No less numerous opponents of the Undertale. They call her a cheap craft, scolding for the bad graphics, which you can break your eyes about, and claim that the game is popular with the valued pretentious indie games of the Western press and the lovers of memes.
