Default Worried by green pixels

July 5th, 2018, 19:32
Hello, everyone,

I'm a bit worried by tiny green pixels showing up on my PC screen - is this a sign the graphics card gets too hot ?

They multiply when playing SWTOR, which is why I think so.

Is there any way to make the fan run more, so to say ?
Is there any thing else I coulddo apart from shitting down the PC ?

Here is summer, currently with temperatures over 25 degrees celsius (a few days ago even around 30 degrees).

I have a Gainward Geforce-based card.

I would consider this very much a last resort.

The green pixelation is certainly typical of a GPU overheating, though it's not conclusive. Can you check the GPU temp being reported in the Nvidia control panel when it occurs?

Gainward is the king of cards and it's hard to believe they overheat. It's almost 40°C here and if my Gainward Phoenix didn't melt… And I'm not playing some outdated graphics mmos.
If you want to check the temp, you can always download and install Speccy - it's not perfect but usually does the job.

Before blaming it on anything:

- check the cord, yes it can be the culprit believe it or not, if it sits firmly, try with another if you have it (for example instead of hdmi use vga or dp if possible)

- if that's set okay, use this util to uninstall the GPU driver, then reinstall it:
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/…-download.html

- if that doidn't help, does your CPU have integrated GPU? if yes, enable it in BIOS if possible, if not then plug out gainward and check what happens when you play mmos with intelHD whatever rubbish

IIRC his PC is 10 years old so it's possibly the only "solution" here.
Still, no reason to give up.

You can use MSI Afterburner to monitor temperatures, as well as to adjust the fan curve.

You sure it works with his Gainward card? Didn't work with two of mine. Gainward has it's own util called Expertool for controlling fans and overclocking.

It's available on Gainward's site and this is how it looks:

I've used it with my AMD Sapphire, as well as my Nvidia Gigabyte card and never had any problems. There are also alternatives, like EVGA Precision and NZXT Cam which should also work regardless of your card's brand. They worked with both of my cards.

Edit: didn't see your edit while I was typing. Yeah, use that if none of those I mentioned work. It's just that Afterburner is the most popular one, and it receives regular updates.

I have that, but I'm unfamiliar with its controls.

I'm confused. Why are you sure it is the graphic card and not the monitor ? My dell 200?fp showed all sorts of neat patterns about 3 months before it died (turned out that model pretty much died 3 to 5 years after purchased - tons of complaints).

Like Joxer said, start with the cable. It's the most common issue I deal with in regards to display issues on a weekly basis. If you're still using pinned cables (D-SUB, DVI), then upgrade that shite ASAP. It might not be the fix, but it's the fastest and cheapest to start with.

Okay, I'll try that.

Looks good so far. Rummaged a bit with the cable plugs, monitor went black, then back again, so far no green pixels … Good luck …
