Cyberpunk 2077 - No Companion System
September 3rd, 2018, 13:19
@Gamingbolt Cyberpunk 2077 will not have a companion system and purchasable properties will be a feature.
“Like in The Witcher, if the story calls for it, you will have a companion or two for a mission,” Weber said. “But we don’t want to do a ‘companion system’ where you’re never alone. In some quests you will be by yourself, in some you will have one person like Jackie or even a whole group, and in other quests you might be alone or with someone else depending on the choices you made. We really want to have it fit the story, so basically you’ll always have someone with you if we think it’ll be interesting.”More information.
Weber also gave some brief details on how your own choices might also affect whether or not you’ll have a companion for the duration of a mission. “Like I said, it can also be dependent on the choices you made,” he said. “Sometimes if you leave someone behind and it makes sense for the story for them to stay behind, we’ll do it. And another time they might catch up. Whatever works best in a situation.”

I actually really like this approach. It feels so natural that you do some things on your own and other things you do it with a team. I think it fits with their vision really well

Classic rpg companions wouldn't really 'fit' here. Imagine going around the city, and someone following you, you go to bed, there s/he is standing right next to you..would feel pretty damn weird. In fantasy hero games it's a bit more credible.
Plus, I don't really like it with games that include stealth, complex/vertical levels, more open ended gameplay. MGSV is only one that pulled it off, as far as I remember.

Makes sense as it didn't fit in Witcher 3 either.
Though you sometimes got a follower for certain missions.

Companions are typically one of my favorite parts of the games in which they're a natural feature (most Bioware games, for example, or Black Isle stuff), but it makes no sense to me in this game. I like their approach.

I wouldn't mind having some Elizabeth around with me all the time only because I have a dick. That'd be another critically acclaimed "story"!
Wait…
If there is no other reason to have a boobs sidekick apart from feeding some juvenile fantasies of a certain people profile - don't force it on everyone. Those people will mod it later anyway.
 CDpr.
Erm, this doesn't mean boobs shouldn't appear elsewhere, where bullets aren't flying. Touchables and explorables by the protagonist please. Sure butts and dicks too to please every taste. And have some mercy on me, introduce orgies in a game already.
Am I asking too much?

Wow, no one qqed about the 1st person perspective or called it a FPS.
Yeah, I agree as well, seems like a game where you want temp companions
and not perm ones. It would also make you so conspicuous as hell!

I thought this was already known.
This isn't a CRPG. It's an FPS with some rpg elements.

And if the game has dialogues with multiple choices, C&C, leveling, loot? When does it become a "real" RPG?
I'm not disagreeing with you, I honestly just don't know where to draw the line anymore. I'll just ask myself: "Do I think I will enjoy this game?"

Maybe. The lines are really blurred these days. If character skill has as much value as player skill but player skill still makes any fight doable if high enough, is it still an RPG? Dark Souls?

I think ( some) people are bit too stuck up on labels, instead of looking at context behind each game.
Rpg is about char progression and choices/consequences, how it impacts gameplay and narrative, across the board.
Cyberpunk has stats, skills, perks, extensive char customization, dynamic mission system that can play out differently based on character build, world progression ( based on player's actions), dialogue choices ( that can change based on your skills), narrative choices, weapon customization, crafting, etc…dunno, to me this seems a lot more complex rpg than most.
Ignoring Silver Coin's typical nonsense, FPS with rpg elements is Far Cry or Borderlands…you have some very light choices throughout the storyline and a basic skill tree ( you can usually "max" everything near the end, so it gives more a purpose to gameplay), and that's pretty much it.
It's not always a bad thing, so long as it makes sense in the game ( Far Cry III, probably a good example).

There are FPS games and then there are twitch games. My reflexes aren't what they used to be and I sincerely hope that the game won't turn out to be aggravating just because I'm a bit slower than CDPR's target audience (yes, I'm thinking about you QTEses from TW2) . Here's me hoping that there will be more ways to resolve a mission than just who is fastest on the trigger…

I usually hate companions in games like this (i.e. Fallout 3,4, Vegas, etc.). I'm glad you just get some support in missions where it makes sense and otherwise do your own thing.

Companions in examples you've mentioned basically stare at you till you ease on the toilet. Remember ME? You still had your personal time and space.

I only like companions in real party based games where you have complete control of them.
So this will suit me just fine as long as no of them are escort missions. I hate escort missions.

How things go fast. When this product was rumoured to be MU, people on this site were damage controlling by telling this would be true to the material source as it was party based.
Today, no companion system is announced and lo, suddenly, it is the best thing that could happen to the product.
It is going to be another no gameplay product.
