What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

In his latest movie (now playing) his coworkers said he was very professional. No clue about his private life.

So Disney got rid of Johnny Depp? Why? Because he's an asshole? I always liked him as an actor but felt neutral about him as a person. Didn't know a single thing about his private life until I saw that home video by his slightly shady wife taping him being drunk and verbally belligerent. Even then I didn't feel anything. "Hey, she puts up with it!" I figured. She wants lots of nice things in life and is willing to eat a lot of shit to get them. Maybe they deserved each other.

I just finished watching The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Superb film. Coen brothers at their best, again. Highly, Highly recommended.

Watched the very same Hereditary.

One of worst movies I've seen in my life. Skip even if your life depends on it.

you have absolutely zero taste in both movies and games so color me unsurprised.. I'm not a total fan of the later portion of the movie, it's kind of like it's two movies in one, which sometimes works really well (From Dusk to Dawn etc), here its debatable, later portion is a cliche, first portion is kind of the opposite of that. But yeah really liked it and i can understand the high score on IMDB. If you're gonna watch one horror movie in 2018 i'd say this is the one.

Speaking of horror flicks: saw Suspiria (2018) yesterday.
Now that was a pleasant surprise - a movie for acquired taste for sure, but yeah: this is how to remake a classic. Well done.

Right?

No.

No.

The year is full od mediocre and less than mediocre horrors. That includes overhyped and overrated boredom Hereditary and Hollywood's silly remake of Argento's masterpiece that's de facto just a cashgrab.

The best shocker I've seen this year so far is Netflix' Apostle. Posted about it already. It's a B movie which means it has it's "bugs", yet manages to outchill every socalled "horror".
I'm not saying there isn't a better one out there, didn't watch them all. For example still didn't watch new Halloween, Ghost Stories nor Les Affames. Nor exotics imdb pretends don't exist like The Whispering.
Also, the year didn't end yet.

I wasn't a huge fan of the original Susperia and never had the desire to re-watch it more than twice. I do like Dario Argento's earlier horror & giallo films though, but I think I even re-watched what he considered his own worst film (The Cat O' Nine Tales) more times than Susperia. The remake can only be much worse, I figure, since the original at least had a uniqueness to it. I thought its sequel (or last part of the trilogy) Mother of Tears was terrible.

Btw, it's wrong to categorize Joxer as having "absolutely zero taste." He's a definite mikey but he just wants what we all want - good movies and TV shows - and can discern (most of the time) the good from the bad.

It's not wrong.
I love criticizing my taste as it does make me analyze if I'm liking something because it really makes me feel good, fun or something else or because mainstream said "that good then it must be goot to me too" or because it's trendy or whatever.
Besides we have a history of a sort. I posted already that reshade is IMO malware and am begging for norespawn mods instead. To some that's instantly lack of taste, but then again I never cared about wrapping much unless it's hairworks. ;)

Anyways… Speaking about this year horrors forgot to mention possibly the biggest disappointment. Slender Man is Conjuring franchise spinoff and after the first Anabelle I thought they won't make another dud. Well, it's not a dud it's worse. Slender Man follows a blueprint how to make one of worst movies ever.
It's a waste of time and money. If you see it airing/streaming somewhere, pretend it's not there and don't watch that garbage. Anything else is better.

Well, the remake is very unique - albeit in a much different way than the original.
Hence I call it a good remake, because it does not want to "improve". It simply tells the same story in a very different way.

Mind you, this is not a proper giallo, this is "art horror", if there is such a genre (Kubrick's Shining, maybe?), and in order to fully appreciate it, a certain background knowledge on Europe's recent history is a must.
So yeah, not your regular chiller, that's for sure.

I watched a movie last night called Stake Land, it was a fairly low budget affair, telling of a vampire take-over of the world with most of the remaining people in the US trying to make their way into Canada. I found it fairly enjoyable, sure you could poke plenty of holes in the tale, and of course some nasty humans turn out to be the most dangerous foes, but it was entertaining.

If i recall correctly Suspiria was that movie that reminded me of a really bad porn flick, terrible lighting and acting etc.. i absolutely couldn't stand it. Might give this one a try then.

Hmm, what was the last movie I enjoyed.

I rewatched The Fly remake and was amazed at how great it was.

But, oh wait - that's from 1986.

We're talking about modern movies.

I don't know.

I watched Dredd in 3D using my Oculus Rift - and that was pretty cool. I love the Slo-Mo sequences.

But, ultimately, movies don't really do much for me anymore - it seems.

I'm deliberately not talking about VR porn here :)

Are you saying The Guilty (2018) is bullshit impossible to enjoy?

Didn't watch it yet, that's why I'm asking.

Okay, this unexpected/unpredictable answer calls for some irrational reaction on my side. Lemme dance a bit. :D

I rewarched Dr Strangelove, everytime I go I am yet ton of be amazed at how incredible it is. I love the repeated statements about not resembling people, when Dr Strangelove is such a match for Jon con Neuman.

Watched A Star is Born this week and loved it.

Reminded me of an 1979 movie called The Rose.
