ATOM RPG - Review @ IndianNoob

IndianNoob has reviewed ATOM RPG:
ATOM RPG Review (PC) Noobreview :: Viva La ApocalypseMore information.
Fallout 2 stands the test of time as one of my top two favourite games ever since 1999. While I've grown to like Bethesda's first attempt at Fallout and loved Obsidian's take on Bethesda's formula, they didn't exactly prove to be a Fallout 2 substitute for me. The same can be said for Underrail, Wasteland 2 and Age of Decadence. They're all their own things. Call me a Nostalgia-stricken purist but it is what it is. So it's no wonder that I've been on the lookout for a game to scratch this particular itch for quite some time. It's how I came to notice ATOM, a crowdfunded indie RPG 'heavily inspired' by the classic Fallouts. 50 hours it took me to answer these two not-so-simple questions; does ATOM delivers on the promises made and is it a good RPG? Let's find out.
ATOM RPG is a post-apocalyptic indie game, inspired by classic CRPGs: Fallout, Wasteland, System Shock, Deus Ex and Baldur's Gate for Microsoft Windows. Developed and published by Atom Team, the game was released into Steam Early Access towards the end of last year and was released out of Early Access on December 19, 2018.

VERDICT
Superficially, ATOM feels less like a spiritual successor and more like a quasi-sequel to Fallout with some strong STALKER vibes. Yet despite the strong similarities, ATOM manages to stand on its own feet thanks to the unique setting and the quirky Slavic charm. It's a well-made game with tried and true RPG systems, but one that doesn't necessarily fix the problems of its role model or revolutionize the systems. ATOM does what it promises to do extremely well. For $ 14.99 or ₹ 479, you just can't go wrong with this one.
Score: 8/10

With the review out of the way, I'm moving to my second playthrough of ATOM. Might make a dumb character this time around. Also picked up Seven: Days Long Gone in the sale so there's that too.

Man, reading this review makes me even more hungry to play the game!!! Hearing that it's not simply some spiritual successor wannabe, but more like a sequel to Fallout just sounds perfect to me.

I vividly recall reading the pitch several times over before sponsoring this project. It will be wonderful to know that, when I do fire this one up, I'm quite unlikely to be disappointed. I also just looked up what this game is being sold for right now, and it is super cheap.

This looks better and better and I think I will get it. I must admit that at first I dimissed it, but it looks like the real thing. Steam scores are pretty good as well.

It suffers from usual "russian game design" syndrome. Great ideas, not enough money for polish/poor execution.
It is playable, it is enjoyable. it is not as good as Fallout. Frankly i liked Underrail more.
But for the price… It is a good value.

I've only played the intro area and first town so far, but it seems quite solid to me. Not like the typical Russian-developed game at all.
Don't get me wrong.. no one is going to mistake it for a AAA title, but it's surprisingly low on jank.

Nice job, Yemeth. You've quickly become one of the few reviewers I take seriously.

It's far from Russian/European jank, it's solid and smooth and polished. Okay, there are some typos and a few slightly strange translations, but I was surprised by how polished it was for the budget. It's definitely worth the asking price.

I have played it now a bit and I'm out of the first settlement. The character system looks mighty impressive.
As to writing, the game seems to be free of political correctedness. The only "gay" character so far was a highly amusing bandit and I'm yet to encounter any minigun wielding confident, independent women. Sure, there are typos but I will take it over shiny PoE 2 any time.

Also has to be said no long load times or tons of launch bugs either.
