Best looking RPG (4k)
March 1st, 2019, 12:09
So I have finally managed to get hold of ("it's in the mail") a nice 2018 ti, and as soon as it is operational I'd love to show off how good the card and the new monitor is (sort of trying to justify it to the wife ;-) )
So then I need a few recommendations. Which (preferably not-so-twichy) RPGs are the prettiest in 4k at the moment. Witcher 3 is already on the schedule but what else looks incredibly nice? Are there any mods that will make stuff even prettier?

The latest Assassin's Creed can probably be considered an RPG at this point. There's also Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Maybe ELEX or ME: Andromeda if you want a slightly different setting, though they're not on par with The Witcher 3, AC or KC: D.

I'm assuming you meant 2080 Ti
There hasn't been a lot of cutting-edge RPGs lately in terms of visuals, but Kingdom Come: Deliverance comes to mind. That's probably the prettiest RPG around right now.
Also, I'm not sure if you play shooters at all, but Metro Exodus looks phenomenal. Definitely one of the best looking games I've ever played.

No RPGs make use of the RTX cards technology, yet…
I doubt your wife will be able to appreciate graphics if she's not a gamer. You best bet would be to show her a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance on your old PC then again on the new one so she has a frame of reference. But no matter how good it looks it's still going to be a threat to your free time.
I've been mostly playing a JRPG called Ace Combat 7 which has some very nice graphics. The volumetric clouds are just fantastic! It's a must-play if you're into fighter jets!
Like JDR says, Metro Exodus with DLSS on would be one of the best RTX supported games to play around with.

4K, I have no idea really, placebo doesn't interest me. Mods too, what's the point of shallow eyecandy with reshade malware - you won't have sex with a game, and even if you would, you need no condom in form of reshade.
When it comes to unmodded, 1080p, best looking RPGs, three are already mentioned: AC Odyssey, TW3 and KCD.
Two weren't mentioned yet: DX:MD and FF15.

Final Fantasy XV is pretty and also a great game to boot. If you want something less-RPG but still stunning then you can try GTA V, also a great game. Fallout 4 looked pretty good when I fired it up on my 1080 ti. But I'd recommend Final Fantasy XV.

LOL, good call. "Look darling, come and see what my RPGs look like with a thousand quid's worth of GPU!" I don't see that cutting much ice.

I'd show off a modded to hell and back version of FO4 or Skyrim along with maxed out ENB and INI settings.

I'm not sure how a wife got into the conversation but, if a spouse that has no clue about gaming is involved… Dwarf Fortress. Be completely amazed. Praise the incredible graphics with a little cussing laced in. Shed some tears if you can manage it.
Switch to Witcher 3 before you bust out laughing.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll just play around with a few of the mentioned ones, TW3 and wait for Cyberpunk 2077 (hopefully not for ever).

Basically any game that looks great in 1080p will look great in 4K. It’s really not much upgrade though.
A Game with HDR and ray tracing in 1080p will be much more impressive than the bump to 4K. I don’t think there’s any rpgs that support both though. AC odyssey supports HDR but Of course your monitor needs to support it as well.

Depends on what you mean by CRPG.
I'll second KCD - especially if you remember to add volumetric fog (it's disabled by default). Not much that can compare to dawn in that game with that setting enabled.
The Division is another personal favorite of mine - and it's probably the prettiest game I've ever played. You should try walking around a snowstorm at night. The most immersive thing you'll ever come across.
Anthem is also very, very pretty indeed.

I've played both Witcher 2 and Witcher 3 in 4k, and it was the first game that made me pause at times to wonder at the details. In the Witcher games it's mostly about armor. Some of the high-end leather armors are so ridiculously detailed. Not just yours, but the NPC's as well. You can actually look at each individual metal stud, each lace. It's amazing.

I picked up FF15 on sale because of this thread. I'm very impressed with the graphics! Great game, so far!
Combat has been pretty easy, though. I think I'm using over-powered DLC weapons. the Ragnarok broadsword with teleport attacks is so powerful that I killed some level 35 giant when my party was only level 7.
