Default Good titles on Switch?

March 1st, 2019, 19:13
I’m a die-hard pc gamer and haven’t owned a console since my PS3. My wife bought me a switch for Valentines Day for some reason. I’ve grabbed a couple of the standard party pleasers like Mario Party and Mario Kart to play when friends are over. But I’m struggling to find other games to buy for the switch to play solo. Most of the games I’m interested in are also available on PC (where they are MUCH cheaper and where I would honestly prefer to play them).

Does anyone have any suggestions for good rpgs (or other games) which are especially good on the switch? I’m not really into jrpgs, card based games, or MOBA type games. The Zelda game looks decent…anything else?

Thanks in advance all!

I had a great time with Breath of Fire. It was the only game I had for my switch for quite a while, and it was the only one I needed. It took quite a while to get through that game, and if you like action-y role playing games, I do recommend it. The last game I purchased was Disgaea Five, which I enjoyed even more than I did the Zelda game. I gave my Switch away several months ago so unless I acquire a new one, I'm unlikely to try out any of the more recent games.

I watched my son play the Zelda game and I was pretty surprised in how unique it was. Lots of physics based puzzles. Interesting game to say the least. I'd try that.

Thanks for the feedback. Breath of fire and Disgaea don’t look like things I would typically play. I may have to give them another look. The Zelda one went on to my to play list.

I don't know if it's ESPECIALLY good on Switch, but Diablo 3 would be a fine choice to pass the time here and there.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a must if you have a switch.

Smash Bros is pretty good if you're into fighters, Splatoon 2 is a decent multiplayer arena shooter.

I'm not generally a fan of 3D Mario games but I've heard Mario Odyssey is pretty good as well.

Hope I'm not late from the party…

Aside the Usual Suspects of Nintendo (Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros), these games I found are pretty good on Switch, despite their PC origins:

Skyrim: this is the carbon copy of the X360/PS3 experience. All official DLCs and the latest bugfixes. Pure joy to play in handheld mode.

Wasteland 2: hardcore PC RPG on the go? Sign me up! All you need is a good eyesight, because the text is rather tiny.

Diablo 3: pure, dumb fun. This is the Reaper of Souls edition for consoles (roll to dodge!), so be prepared for a slightly different (IMHO better) feel compared to the PC.

Civilization VI: a classic turn based time sink, excellent for burst play on the go (just one more turn… and I'll promise I'll finish, darlin' -- promise broken: just one more turn…)

If you are open to some experimentation, here are some gems:

Okami: A Zelda clone rooted deep in Japanese folklore. Superb atmosphere.

SNK Classics: a very fun game history lesson, with some seriously hardcore arcade games. A portable quarter grabber, yeeehaaa!

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker: the bastard child of Monument Valley and Mario. In a word: excellent.

Finally, if you are an online gamer, and looking for something more friendly than your average sweat-smellin', toxic-infested CoD / CS:GO session, try these out as well:

Splatoon 2: despite the cutesy nature, this is a very hardcore team based FPS. The community is a blast!

Arms: this one is weird. A boxing game with some super crazy characters. Simple game mechanics, but strangely addictive (and a decent workout with motion controls!)

Hope this suggestion helps!

Really check out the above title on a "let's play". I am thoroughly enjoying it. Planning to pick up Skyrim soon; the 4th or 5th re-iteration of this game lol.
