Default Chris Avellone - StarWars Film Criticism

May 12th, 2019, 00:32
Chris Avellone is the main writer for the next Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order, and he shared his opinion of the movies. I put this here because it's non-rpg movie news.

Link - https://www.videogameschronicle.com/…dis-execution/
The veteran writer and designer, who most notably helmed Obsidian’s Knights of the Old Republic 2, said that while he enjoyed “some bits” of The Last Jedi, overall he “didn’t like the execution” of its story.

“I thought that portrayal of Luke Skywalker was very weak,” he told VGC. “I thought they gave him a scapegoat role that wasn’t merited and didn’t fit with his character, in my opinion.

“I like the fact that they were playing around with it, but at the same time I didn’t like the execution and I thought it could have been handled a lot better or differently.”

He added: “I also thought it was a case of comedy goes too far, side characters and massive detour plots were rapidly introduced… I liked what they were trying to do, I just didn’t like how it was executed.”

Is the full interview anywhere?

Weird that it was edited to just this little snippet, and a little annoying that the point that snippet chose to focus on was the startling observation that the latest movie had plot holes and structural problems (yeah, no shit).

He says that the part of lore most relevant to his new game is the Clone Wars series. So … can we get a little more on what he thought of the Clone Wars?

Reading the article I was assuming it was a summary of a longer piece posted somewhere else, but the interview was apparently with this site, and these few lines were all they chose to print.

He only said that because Fearghus mentioned he loves the movie.

I just found this…

It was recently confirmed that, not surprisingly, no one really cares what Chris Avellone's opinion is.

Not true the Codex has a cult following who worships him.

For the record I hate the New StarWars movies myself.

My father who passed away did as well.

The Last Jedi was mostly shit.

According to that Dart guy though, it's the best Star Wars movie.

I care. Because it's not just "awsome/horrible" statement and leave it at that but a few words why is something good or bad.
I don't always agree ofc, but it's always nice to know why one's opinion is such as it is.

Compared to original SW trilogy, can't agree more.
Compared to Rogue One and Solo, it's a masterpiece.

Rogue One and even Solo were fantastic in comparison to this joke of a movie.

In an Star Wars fan forum I'm in, there is currently a hefty discussion about the new movies.
Most older fans outright dislike them, newer fans are mostly neutral. Only few are positive towards them.

I liked them, though the first new one was a retread. Its the weakest of the bunch.

Both Rogue One and Solo suffer the problem of all prequels in that they end up making events in the real movies weak.

--

I didn't like that Rey didn't have an intriguing parentage, but I understand why they did it.

Skywalker was actually great and was exactly what I expected. Rey was too Mary sue.

When the Dune novels did to Paul exactly what Disney did to Luke the fans were up in arms too. So my buddy asks me, if they knew the reaction would be bad, why did they still do it?

Now that they've retconned the Light and Dark side of the force they can move on to new Lore. The Jedi and Sith are dead. Its the only way writers can move on from so much baggage especially from the cryptic stuff that built up in the novels.

The Force Awakens gave you something familiar; the Last Jedi undoes it all. This is what all sides were going for.

Look what's happened with Star Trek. Its one of the reasons they took the show to a new universe. Rick Berman's reboot idea he wanted years ago - well we see it all doesn't work out that well. People still want the same thing they are familiar with.

Blowing it all up to start over is the way to do.
