Buying new PC ( for 2077)..any recommendations

Ryzen Zen 2 really seems to be the holy grail of upgrades at the moment. However a few things to consider. If you have issues with your current system, I would try and iron those out first and see if you can last a few more months. If you went Ryzen right now, you'd be dealing with various driver/game patches and motherboard updates as is usual on a new platform, so assumption is good that you would be dealing with issues either way for the next few months. The main difference, is that after a few months, AMD and Intel will have done a little more settling when it comes to their CPU prices for consumers. I would wait until then, get a better deal, and see if there's a benefit to going to a new X570 board with active cooled chipset, a new chipset that seems much more appealing, or a reliable previous gen chipset like B450 or X470.

Another thing to consider is that SSD prices are starting to drop on the NVMe side of things. A few more months and you could be getting a great deal on an ultrafast SSD around the 1TB size for a great deal.

For RAM, same thing. Wait a few months. Ryzen is showing some great performance promises depending on RAM speeds. Wait until some reviews and tests have come out to see how stability and what the price/performance is for Zen 2 RAM speeds. 16GB is probably what you should aim for, but as far as I know, there's no games out there that require even the full 16GB at the moment. Are you running VMs? Running massive 64-bit Excel sheets? Streaming 100 browser tabs of porn at once? Probably don't need 32-bit. But if you get a deal on it, then do it. Also note that new Ryzen chips are 2 channel I believe. 2 x 16GB is going to faster than 4 x 8GB. Keep that in mind.

I probably wouldn't wait a couple of months though. Ofc there is always better stuff in the future, and stuff always gets more stable over time, but it's actually a pretty good time now to get new stuff, as the new graphics cards from nvidia and amd just released, and you shouldn't expect anything coming up in the near future.
I wouldn't say "buy it right now", as it probably makes sense to wait 2-6 weeks or so to have shops pile up the wares and let the new prices sink in, but I wouldn't necessarily wait longer (at least if you want a new pc asap) as there is always something cool and shiny coming up. If you wait 3 months, the next Hardware might be ahead in 3 months, and when it releases you wait for another 3 until it's polished and you are in an endless loop.
Right now you have a bit of a bigger gap though and if you buy stuff in the next weeks/months you'd probably have the most up to date hardware for longer than on any "average perdiod" as this is a rather rare occasion.

With regards to GPU I noticed an article that suggest AMD will be releasing their high end GPU sometime in the relatively near future (i forget if it was 6 or 12 months - since I'm not in the market I just glanced at the article - it was in a review of the new cards just released by amd). This will do two things apply pressure to nvidia high end gpu (price pressure) and provide an alternative option.

There will always be something new but unless you want a new gpu today i'd wait as long as possible as there is some interesting stuff from perf/price point (as always is the case).

Myself I probably won't upgrade from the 1070 until i want to go hdr (if the 1070 has perf problems - no clue until i get a hdr monitor - not going to play games on a large tv).

Normally i'd agree, but not with such a significant change to CPU, chipset and bus architecture. This isn't the same as going from 2001 Civic to a 2002 Civic. It's more comparable to going from a Ford Focus to a Tesla Model 3. My recommendations also come with a subtle assessment of Bobo's needs. One of his motivation factors for upgrading is stability issues. I wouldn't recommend trading one stability issue for another, statistically speaking. That compounded with 2077 not coming out until April equates to "wait a couple more months".

Yep. I picked up an RX580 8gb on the used market for $140 Canadian (which is like $5 US btw…..), which will run pretty much anything right now at 1080p (or for me, 1080p Ultrawide). There's just no need to upgrade for me at the moment, and Freesync only extends that. Unless i'm looking to futureproof or get really involved with a game that would benefit from an upgrade (such as something raytrace related).

There's always great deals to be had, and depending on needs, the highest end doesn't always makes sense.

Regarding recent AMD's GPUs, these are a great purchase - but nVidia's "super" cards are plain too exciting to skip.

Of course there is no reason to upgrade if you already have a strong card, and you do. Bobo has some ancient GPU so…

Noone will ever use it to the whole potential and by the time the software "learns" how to maximize efficiency on such hardware, a new and cheaper technology with more power will appear.

All it provides is bragging rights, placebo and pisspoor optimizations.

I don't agree with joxer about buying a cheap mouse. I think a quality mouse can make gaming quite a bit better. That said, one of my favorite ones has 6 buttons on the side that you can customize and it is great to use for games that have a lot of keys that you need to hit. (like 2077) You can also map any macros that you need as well. This mouse is only $36 and well worth it. Also, get a nice controller because you're better off playing a console game how it was supposed to be played rather than crying about how bad the PC port is on forums.

Of course, assuming you don't have fully functional 10 fingers (at least) thus need autoaim, forget K+M and go for whatever device ment for your condition.
In some cases where the problem is arthritis or something with your palms however, Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is a great option, comes for both righthanded and lefthanded, is a bit pricey though.

Mouse are personal; i've liked $10 mouses and disliked $80 mouses - it is just a luck of the draw - my favorites (neither still made) was the three button logic-tech mouse (was around $12) and the dell mouse that came with their pc from around 2002 to 2015 - the current one sucks.

I've tried a few more expensive mouse (or mice?) - i think the most expensive was $60 or $80 and it was ok - not worth the money and it died after 3 or 4 years (when i 'googled' the cause of the death - it was a well known defect that pissed off a lot of people - bad switch in one of the buttons that was nearly impossible to replace due to position - i think it was a corsair if that matters.

for keyboards i have tried a few mechanical the last few years but my favorite was the $14 keytronic - alas they stopped making it a few years ago - but i have a couple of extras. Dell also had a good keyboard for a while - not sure about the current one. Anyways I don't want to inject what is right for you or anyone else since it really is dependent on the invidual - i can only state what works for myself.

Sure, if you can find a good mechanical keyboard for $14 that's awesome. I just feel like it's worth spending extra on things you use often.

I think I spent close to $200 on mine and now when I use other peoples keyboards I scoff at how bad they feel.

I have been disappointed by expensive mouses before but I still feel like it's worth getting on aimed at gaming with a few extra buttons. I've got 2 thumb buttons and they get a lot of use.

I like to map as many thing as possible to my mouse so 10 plus buttons is a must. I could never use a cheapie 2 button mouse. For keyboard i use the stealth merc and could never use anything else. They don’t make it anymore so I bought 3 of them in case any break.

On topic, I’d wait a couple weeks maybe a month to see how pricing shakes out but i can’t see any reason to wait longer. Also if its purely for gaming at 1080p or even 1440p it looks like intel still rules. However, if you don’t mind sacrificing some FPS and do anything multi core intensive it’s ryzen 3000 all the way.

Yeah, I think regarding controls I think it's mostly a matter of taste.

Imho mechanical keyboards put you to an disadvantage as it makes it harder to hit the activation point multiple times per second in a controlled way. Like in a racing game when people complain that it's hard to fine control your vehicle with a keyboard. It's not, if you use a good membrane board. As much as I despise razer, their Arcosa Keyboard is really good and I am using it for 10 years now.

Regarding mice: High or Low delay, high or low resolution, heavy or light, how many buttons, tiltable wheel or not, multifunction scrollwheel or not…

So far I always went with Logitech, however I cannot recommend them unconditionally. They have a couple of models which are rather crap (even if they cost a lot) and some come with mixed quality, depending on whether you are lucky or not.
I got a G502 which is the follow up model of the G500 for example.
However the G502 has a scrollwheel which in "free scroll" mode is not 100% accurate. It's not a huge deal, but I'd expect more and didn't have that issue with my G500, which is why I'd recommend the older model.
I also owned a G700 before where the main button had an issue after just months and where the cord was extremely uncomfortable.

I quite fancy one of those mice that recharge wirelessly from their mousepad.

You missed my point; i preferred the $14 keyboard over the expensive mechanical keyboard i purchased (actually 2 different ones). Its fine if you prefer the mechanical…. just making my point clear since you were rather confused.

Bought my son one, the Logitech with the g903 mouse. he absolutely loves it. It charges all the time unlike some of them that require you to place your mouse in a specific area of the mouse pad and leave it there to charge. Don't really understand the point of those. That would be even more limiting than a standard wireless mouse that you can at least plug in and still use while it charges.

You're saying you prefer $14 plastic membrane keyboards over $200 mechanical keyboards.

I vastly prefer mechanical, but I haven't tried your favourite $14 one. I would have thought if it was that good they'd still be making it?

No clue on the implementation of the $14 keyboard (they are keytronic but about 3 years ago they stopped being available). There was some sort of history about why they stopped - i read it when I couldn't find it but i don't remember the details. I think the company it self is almost defunct.

Another keyboard I liked a lot that was cheap was the dell - not necessary the current one but the ones they were shipping around 2010 in the standard bundle - not that garbage you could buy from their website (i don't know what they are currently shipping). I do have (or had) one original ibm keyboard (from 1980's); now that was a keyboard - haven't used it in years - not sure if it still work with modern computers - i stuck it in a closet at my parents house. Today i'm at a bind - most of the inexpensive keyboards are garbage but i don't love the mechanical ones i've tried - and i've tried 4 or 5 (couple were friends so i didn't buy them - i've tried red, brown and blue switches).

Finally, done with this. After doing some interior rearranging of old PC ( ended up impressively demolishing it) got RYZEN 5 3600X with Asus Gaming MBO, 2 Gskill 3000Hz ( 16 GB), new Sharkoon case.
Also a Monitor, 32 inch, AOC q3279vwfd8.
Any advice on driver installation…image looks a bit fuzzy.
Also best way to retrieve files from old HD..tried to plug it in with new PC, but ends up crashing ( start up repair does not work).

Unlike linux; windows driver management is completely broken. The old install probably lacks the drivers for the new system (unless old cpu was the same cpu and if it was intel you are really screwed).

The best solution i've found (others might have a better solution) is to make a backup of the old system (might be hard now); then do a windows recovery on the new system using the backup to restore the content.
