Sorry that you guys are having issues; it's undoubtedly the new patch as not only did I personally never have issues prior, but there's also been some new bug reports in the Kingmaker discord.
It's worth mentioning that, if you're playing on GoG, you can do version rollbacks. I mention this specifically because many people prefer the Nexus mod to Owlcat's own implementation (something about clunky pacing in the new Def. version turn-based mode).
