Default Gloomhaven - Two new Mercenaries

November 8th, 2020, 22:25
Two new mercenaries can be recruited in Gloomhaven:

Two new mercenaries have arrived in town. Welcome to the city streets!

The gates have opened! Discover the new major update of Gloomhaven Early Access!
"Another street fight broke out… it was commonplace in the lower town. This time however, the crowd around the two concerned caught your attention. As you get closer, you manage to discern an imposing horned figure in the crowd, obviously settling her score with a thief who had the misfortune of trying to steal her purse full of gold. A new mercenary has arrived in town--and it seems that she was not alone. A figure covered in armor put an end to the combat, separated the attackers and settled the conflict in a few well thought words. Her large, mysterious eyes displayed considerable pride and disdain. Maybe a second recruit for your guild?"

TWO STRONG AND SOLID MERCENARIES ARE WAITING TO BE RECRUITED

Always eager to prove herself in a challenge, the first mercenary is a warrior willing to go to any lengths to keep her people safe, including sacrificing her own life. Careful, as the more wounded she becomes, the more dangerous it becomes to fight against her! Welcome the Beserker!

The second mercenary who joined the fight is from a unique race never seen in the Early Access… They often travel the world, seeking out situations where they can demonstrate their brilliant powers. Proud and diplomatic, you can count on her abilities to protect your fellow mercenaries. Recruit the Sunkeeper!

I was extremely disappointed with the card/move-mechanic. I always hate it when you have to discard your resources/spells to move, generate mana, etc. It is just bad game design imo.

As the game is now, I don't think I will find joy in endlessly reading the same cards to determine which part I will be able to cast and which part I will have to discard to move 2.

I've put in well over 100 hours and I find their system fun and rewarding. IMO, it is not bad game design, and the overwhelming popularity of the boardgame backs me up on this.

Writing is godawful however.

I'm currently playing the boardgame with three other friends and we're having a blast. The card discard mechanic is crucial to the core design that is basically a ticking clock as soon as you begin. I get that it's not for everyone, but once you accept it and are willing to incorporate that design into your choices, it's really quite thrilling to conclude a scenario as the last person standing with just one card left.
That said, I have not tried the Steam EA version. I'll probably pick it up and play it with another group of friends online once it's complete though.

Yeah, I haven't played the online version, but having played hours of this game at home, the card management is a great example of mechanics reflecting and enhancing flavor.

I've played a lot of games that mimic D&D adventures, and they generally feel a bit aimless -- you go from encounter to encounter with little sense of urgency, often at random.

In Gloomhaven you feel that you're proceeding step by treacherous step into ever-deeper shadows, clutching your few resources and praying they'll last you through the fight. It really captures that "ten levels down in the dungeon with one potion left" feeling.
