What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

I watched Get Out tonight.
I seem to recall some Watchers saying it was pretty good. I found it mildly interesting, but I didn't think it was scary in the least. Also, the ending was ridiculously far-fetched and downright silly.

I enjoyed "Get Out" and yes, I agree, it wasn't scary in the slightest, nor even gory. It's one of those thrillers that will work once, I'm not sure I'd ever re-watch it, but I did like it when I watched it.

I don't know if scary is the right word, the phrase people used a lot was "A Modern Twilight Zone", which is more mystery theatre, but with shades of creepiness and darkness, etc. Us is in the same bracket but is less enjoyable due to the nonsense plot. So Get Out is like a good Twilight Zone episode whereas Us is like a filler Twilight Zone episode.

Scary? Why should it be scary? It wasn't supposed to be.
Oh you mean imdb slapped horror on it? Yeah… Not the first nor the last time they misgenred a title.
The ending is pitch perfect which is a rare feat in Hollywood's past 20 years.
Although a different story, Us is on the same level of quality. If you didn't like Get Out you should skip it.
Both are a mustwatch in my book of movies like no other.

I don't think I've even heard of his follow up film, "Us", I'll need to check that one out, thanks!!

BTW: Golden Globe classified it for some reason as a comedy film.

Went old-school tonight, and watched Near Dark (1987). By today's standards, you could describe the pacing as almost ambient, but I still really enjoyed the character of the direction.

Father, I have sinned. I've never watched the Shining.
Until now. I'm going to watch dr. sleep, and since that one according tod rumours is supposed to be a follow up, I decided to correct my ways.
I think it was a good movie. In general I haven't been too happy with King movies, they tend to be horror light (I do like his books). Notable excepion are the Its. And now the Shining.
My enjoyment was a bit hampered since I basically new the story (not from the book), but I'm glad I watched it.
an incarnation of pibbur who thinks now perhaps is the time to play the games he is too embarassed to admit he's never played.

Glengarry Glen Ross
I keep coming back to this one, for the nth time. I just enjoy watching the mastery with which all the actors portray their characters. I think my favorie it Jack Lemmon's. He's fantastic.

Ah yes, Glengarry Glen Ross, that truly is one of the all-time greats. As you say, even if you can't find interest in the plot, which anyone should be able to, the sheer masterclass of competing top-draw actors is a sight to behold all by itself.
I still remember to this day the first time I saw it. I must have been a young adult at the time, somewhere around 20 years old. I had no specific or set views on the world and no life experience, but it still spoke to me as if communicating something I already expected of the world.
It was late in the evening, approaching the midnight hour and I was half asleep browsing through television stations and I just happen to come across the start of this film. I checked out who was in it and decided to give it five or ten minutes before bed.
Before I knew what time it was it had ended and I knew instantly that I'd seen something of the most supreme quality. A gem that seemed to me to be the perfect example of a hidden gem. I've been recommending it ever since. It's nice to see its presence still adorning people's attention all these years later and hopefully for years to come.

I somehow missed this movie entirely until about 2018 or 2019, I think. And I have no idea how. It’s marvelously written, has an all star cast so I’m not sure how I never saw any mention of it. But finally I did see it mentioned. And how? Some guy posted the Alex Baldwin speech on some thread as a joke. And that was it. It got the curiosity bug in me. Saw it the next day and was amazed at how it was possible for me to miss it. And I think I pretty regularly check lists of best films and it never came up. I’m glad that guy posted it. I’ve been spreading it as much as possible ever since.

Netflix.
Space Sweepers.
A mustwatch. Okay?
It's not there to be some masterpiece these imdb trolls pretend to criticize, it's there to entertain you. And I promise it will.
Use original audio with subs ofc.

I'd been meaning to watch Knives Out, and with the recent passing of Plummer, I watched the film yesterday. I thought it was ok, nothing really revolutionary or different from other movies where I'd seen something similar and done better, but it was entertaining for two hours. Most of all I enjoyed watching Plummer chew through some great lines!!

Anyway sad to see Mel Gibson falling so low.

(I'll probably watch it anyway.)

Gibson is only a side character in that movie and you'll see him like 5 minutes max.
He's not the only short timing guest, Michelle Yeoh is another.
And no it's not deathloop actually, but doomloop or preyloop. Forgive me but I have to make sure JDR watches it.
Maybe you saw more entertaining and more fun Hollywood's whodunnit from 2019. But I bet you didn't.
