There are texture mods for G1 that improve the visuals significantly. They still won't be on par with modern games obviously, but I think the art direction more than makes up for it.

I'm keeping my expectations modest for the remake. Gothic was one of the most immersive games I've ever played. They have a monumental task in trying to recreate that atmosphere.

texture mod + infinite distance range = looks more than okay
still remains one of the few games where its really scaring exploring forests, at night is a nightmare lol

No matter how much you enhance and upscale graphics you can't polish a turd. Better yet it's basically putting lipstick on a pig in the end. The remake is necessary.

There's a DirectX 11 mod as well that adds some pretty nice lighting and shadows. It was still a little buggy last time I checked, but it adds to the atmosphere nicely.

Even with just the texture mod though, I think it still looks great for a 20 year old game. It aged a lot better than most games from that time.
