When the reviewer says this, he isn't kidding!
"This game is going to have you up to your eyeballs in dialog. Playing through this game is essentially reading a book, because there is so, so much dialog."
The script contains an estimated 1.2M words divided between dialog options. That's more than War and Peace, The Bible, or the entire Harry Potter series of books.
Torment is one of my all-time favorite crpgs and certainly has some of the best writing, but I'll admit to skipping/skimming most of it on my first playthough. However, I advise new players not to do that or you'll miss out on some great stuff like this:

Nameless One: "Can you dig around in my body for anything?"
Marta: "Marta can do that, cancha Marta? Yes you can!"
Nameless One: "Check the intestines; anything could be lodged in there."
You lie upon the table, and Marta stands over you, a rusty knife at the ready. There is a stabbing pain as she slices into your abdomen, then cuts brutally downwards in a saw-like motion, exposing your innards. Despite the pain, you watch in silent morbid fascination as she plunders your organs, humming to herself.
