Strange characters when I quote stuff
May 21st, 2021, 21:43
I don't know if others can see them, or if it's just me.
But, for whatever reason, when I quote stuff - some of the words are turned into weird symbols. Seems to happen when they involve non-letter characters.
Is that a bug on my end (browser related, perhaps - though I've tried both Chrome and Edge) - or some new feature of RPGWatch?

Probably character set/code related.

It seems to be a known issue with VBulletin. Someone in that thread solved it by upgrading to a newer version it seems, but I have no idea how viable or easy that would be here.
Not a big problem when you're aware of it - but it's aesthetically displeasing to my sensitive eyes

It's a sort of baptism or initiation (not sure those are the correct words for it)
Other offensive non-ASCII characters like accented letters don't make it easily either.
I noticed that it went better when we were editing posts instead of posting them the first time. When I paste a text, I try to first make a post, then edit it and paste the content (usually I forget, so I edit and re-paste it).
So somewhere in the PHP code, there must be two different paths, with something bad in the code of a new post. But I understand the forums will eventually be updated.
I think the "dot dot dot" linked earlier are behaving differently (they're fine in the first post, then get messed up when quoting or editing).

Whe are on the latest 3.8 version and there will be no newer ones. I've bought new forum software, but lack the time at the moment to spend on converting it. Given the road vBulletin has taken with versions 4 and 5, we will not be using that. It is quite a bit of work as it is not just the conversion of the posts, but also the integration with our CMS software. That part was hacked in. I did manage by now to move all those hacks into a single file and add an API layer, which means that the impact on our CMS software should be minimal, but the actual hacks should still be added to the new forum software.
I probably will take a week off from work or so in the not too far future to get this done.

I kind like the idea that we've gremlins in the mix…..cue Shatner looking out a window of the airplane, frightened out of his gourd!
Speaking of the Shatner….ninety years old. I rode horses with him in the late eighties and mid-nineties, and I bet he can still ride now. Good on him!
