My, my, but there really was an awful lot of generic RTSes back in those days wasn't there!

K&M had a very nice build up aspect whereby it was really about making sure you had a working economy to serve food to your soldiers.
As I mentioned 7 Kingdoms had a whole population aspect per village which I have not actually seen since I believe. For example, if you could convert them to your cause you would gain the village without fighting.
The spying elements were very special for the time too.

Undoubtedly.
Every time I go looking I start browsing promising looking titles and almost without fail the research comes back RTS or aRPG. Which would be great for anyone who loves generic fantasy and military RTSes, a veritable heaven of near endless games to try out.
However, I never really got on with them. I'm a big fan of building games though, just as long as they're not pure sims but are somehow related to wider gameplay. So a lot of the games I've liked or looked into from that era do have RTS elements, just none of the 10 billion fantasy/medieval/war ones that look to be all the same game unless, like you say, you happen to be an expert on them and know why each one is specifically different and for you to know why that difference is important to you.
