Assassin's Creed sale, recommendations?
December 17th, 2021, 19:36
There's a deep sale on the AC franchise on Steam. I probably shouldn't buy another huge game I won't finish but …. in case I do…. which of the recent ones would you recommend the most?
I played AC2 and 4 extensively, never played any of the others except the first one.
For settings, Syndicate looks cool and Vikings>Egypt>Greece but really it's about the best gameplay with the least fatigue . Valhalla which I'd have to get on Xbox is also on sale but not as much of a discount. Any thoughts?

Well you played the best 2 of the series, Ezio ones rule. 3 is boring af, Sybdicate is not interesting. Unity might be worth it but it was in terrible state regarding performance, no idea if they fixed it just a little. The last 3 are veeery big and need to invest many hours in them.
I would get Rogue, is a different experience

Since it doesn't matter to you that you go in order, I'd go straight to Valhalla. Gameplay wise, it's similar to the last few as far as combat, traversal and stealth mechanics. It's the best looking AC game. It has the best exploration and the least mindless repetition. Good story and characters, and it's freaking enormous, so it'll keep you busy as long as you want it to.
Syndicate was one of my favorites so I wouldn't try to talk you out of that one either.

How many games can a skip and still have the story make some sort of sense?
Also - is Black Flag that bad? It interests me because it has lots of naval exploration, etc.

None of the games actually follow a straight timeline. Just play the last three games as they changed the formula for the better. They are no longer stealth assassin games.

The story that takes place in the time period of the game is different in each game and requires no knowledge of any previous games (with the exception of Ezio's story, which spans a trilogy that should be played in order).
Black Flag isn't bad at all. A lot of people rank it among their favorite AC games. I didn't say Black Flag is crappy, I said Rogue is crappy Black Flag.

Black Flag isn't bad, but, like all the older titles, it's too gamey for my taste. Too many things that break the fourth wall.
It wasn't until I played AC Odyssey in Exploration Mode that I was finally able to reach some level of immersion in an AC game. It's fair to say though that most gamers are more tolerant of things I find immersion-breaking.

My favourites were Rogue, Unity and Black Flag (I haven't played after Syndicate, that I didn't even finish).
I liked AC II (Florence, Venice, …) and AC: Brotherhood (Rome) a lot too, mostly because I love that country, and the music of Brotherhood is fantastic (great job by Jesper Kyd). They've probably badly aged.
Black Flag and Rogue were a ton of fun. The first one for the setting, and the second one for the naval combats and going from land to sea was more convincing.
I also loved Unity for the rendering of Paris and the immersion into the French revolution setting.

Origins / Odyssey seem very grindy. But many people recommend Origins for the setting and stealth.
For now I grabbed Valhalla on Xbox.
If I were to pick another, it would be either Origins or Unity
It's unlikely I'll finish either game of the games I buy but it's okay at this price point.
