Guess the characters

Hopefully this is the first time you see this one.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8=?

3 is South Park

2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

7 is Donald Duck or Scrooge McDuck & the three nephews.

This isn't the first time I've seen this one before, maybe next time though

I know all on first sight except 2 and 3.

I didn't know a single one, though my eyesight might be partially to blame.

The only one I didn't recognize right away is 6. Never watched the M. S.

I recognized all of them except for 5 & 8. I've no idea who those are.

I got all of them except 4 and 8. In have no idea who the Daltons are.

I think Asterix and Lucky Luke are more popular in Europe.

Lucky Luke is French/Belgian and Asterix is French, so better known on our side of the pond indeed. I don't know about Lucky Luke but Asterix has been translated in most languages (including Latin), I strongly encourage to read it if you know a little about European history and/or culture, it's great (especially the earlier ones by Goscinny/Uderzo).

I could tell 1, 2, 4, 7 straightaway then recognised 5 after I looked at Redglyph's spoiler. Then suddenly I also could tell what 3 is.



No idea what 6 and 8 are.

Yeah - at least until volume 24 "Asterix in Belgium" - the last one that was texted by Goscinny.

For people who'd like to know how right/wrong they were

I can recognise them all except no.8 once made known of who they are. I don't think LL and the DG ever made it to the UK. All the others did though and were very popular.

I concur about Asterix, if any of you have never read them then you're in for a treat one day. Don't make the mistake of watching the films first though, the cartoon books are where they're at.

Both were fun as a kid, I'm not sure that's something fun to discover later.

The Muppet Show (Bert & Ernie) is just a crazy mix of fun musical performances with puppets, so a puppet show - I can't see if there's a play on words with "muppet", is that from "moppet" or "mopping"? A native English speaker will probably have a better idea. EDIT: Bert & Hernie are not in the list I linked above, they're mostly in Sesame Street, I think they share the same origin as the Muppet Show.

Lucky Luke is probably best known by kids who like to play cow-boys (or used to) I don't even know if it's sold in Australia or in the US.

Exactly I could never enjoy the following books as much, his dialogues are very good. If you say the same, it means the translations kept the same level of quality, which must be difficult sometimes with this type of humour. The stories in Britain and in Helvetia are among my favourites.

Gudrun Penndorf was the first German translator of Asterix (vol 1 to vol 29).
And her work is excellent. She invented new phrases in German when the direct translation didn't work well.

Example:
"Die spinnen, die Römer" sounds much nicer in German than the direct translation "Uiii, die Römer sind doof" (Ils sont fous, ces Romains)

I'd like to add: Asterix and Obelix are available in Kindle edition on Amazon. As was mentioned above, start with the earlier ones, made by Goscinny and Uderzo.
I enjoyed the latest in the series Asterix and the Griffin, but Goscinny and Uderzo can not be topped.
