Default NVIDIA Hit By Major Cyberattack

In their exclusive report, The Telegraph reports that the cyberattack was initiated at the same time as the Russian cyber warfare division started their offensive against Ukraine. All Nato allies have announced major sanctions on Russia and this could potentially be why Russia has decided to target major companies such as NVIDIA.

That doesn't make much sense to me, they'd first attack significant online services or governmental sites. A hypothesis on getting info on how to work around limitations for cryptocurrency, for example, would more easily convince me.

This creates a feeling of uneasiness - and manipulating emotions are a huge part of psychological warfare.

This won't affect nvidia devices on a computer, correct? Just the online components?

Yeah, don't worry. The most annoying part is that the attackers may have grabbed sensitive information about the products, but it's mainly a problem for NVIDIA. The rest seems to be back from the link above.

That's pretty funny.
Did NVIDIA Pull Off a Cyber Counterattack?

The report on The Telegraph (may require registration or subscription) saying NVIDIA was breached by a cyber attack turns out to be accurate. NVIDIA tells Bloomberg (may require registration or subscription) that this was "relatively minor" and "unconnected to Ukraine." But according to Wccftech, NVIDIA was reportedly also able to turn the tables on the attackers with a breach in return. NVIDIA was allegedly able to use ransomware to encrypt the over 1TB of its own data to render it useless to the original attackers. This report is unconfirmed, and also notes it's also possible the stolen data was backed up before NVIDIA was able to encrypt it:

Vx-underground states that LAPSU$, an extortion group, operating out of South America is claiming responsibility for the cyberwar attack that infiltrated NVIDIA's servers a few days ago. It is claimed that over 1 TB of NVIDIA's proprietary data was exfiltrated however NVIDIA was quick to react and successfully managed to breach the hackers with its own response.

The same group claims that NVIDIA performed a hack back by not only encrypting all of its data that was stolen but by attacking the hackers with ransomware. The ransomware is alleged to be installed on the private machine used by the hackers but they were able to make a backup of the files (which is currently a rumor).

I doubt that many companies would be able to produce anything close to NVIDIA's GPUs, they are enormous and hugely complex chips. It would take them months to begin to understand the design from the information they could get.

Then it's very long and costly to produce, starting the production of an ASIC in a recent technology requires high NRE costs too, long before the chip can even be used.

But mostly, they are not optimal for blockchains algorithms, just convenient when the cards already exists. People have already made ASICs for that purpose, or used FPGAs which allow to bypass the production steps and which can be reprogrammed (or, which can be used at night when the company you're working for doesn't need them for their original purpose).

EDIT: "or worse": I confusedly remember an old news about a graphics card company, saying they couldn't ship their products in some countries because they were considered as warfare material - so powerful they could be used to guide missiles or something as exuberant. Maybe the article was sponsored.

I can't find it back, it was funny to see. Modern GPUs can certainly be used for a lot of purposes though, there's some truth in that.

What's the point of using certificates if the certification chain is not used correctly?
