Default ELEX II - Review @ Ragequit.gr

March 5th, 2022, 12:39
Ragequit.gr has reviewed ELEX II:

ELEX II

There should be a more extensive analysis/tribute/article on the games that have come to be grouped under the umbrella of the unofficial but noble genre known as Eurojank. What we're mostly interested in now, however, is the fact that Piranha Bytes as a company is probably the God-Emperor of this genre. The main Eurojank characteristics (games from central/eastern European studios with an overambitious concept, unforgivably increased difficulty compared to more "mainstream" games, mildly mediocre production values and often a plethora of bugs) can be found in pretty much all of the company's game series, and, like Gothic and Risen, ELEX could not be an exception. In this light, someone who chooses to play ELEX II, which officially launches tomorrow March 1st, is like knowing in advance the vast majority of the features he can expect from it. But is this really the case this time?

[…]

Perhaps, in the end, reviews of this kind are slightly unnecessary for games developed by companies like PB, and can be completely replaced by specific short sentences: "fans of open-world RPGs will be more than entertained by this", "fans of immersive AAA experiences expecting an extremely polished product with Hollywood-level production values will be discouraged", "fans of PB will love it". We live in a Eurojank world. Let us remain here, my friends.

Score: 84/100

Yes it's GOTY and your just jealous because were not praising Elden Ring.

Nah it's an average to above average game that will appeal to PB Fans.

Just like how From Software trolls/fans keep hyping the Souls genre.

?

It's been a long time since I've felt as immersed as I am when playing Elex II.

I love that you can't customise the main character in any way, feels like you're reading a book and following this guy's epic story through this fantastic alien world with deeply immersing lore. The world is just so beautiful and enticing to explore. The voice acting just superb. The controls and character animations crispy and clean, and combat in general feels so well tuned and rewarding, with an infinity of ways to approach each situation.

I don't care about other games, I came here to talk about Elex II, and I think a 84 is being extremely conservative. I commend the reviewer for remaining objective and sensible, despite the fact that this game deserves nothing but the highest praise.

Well, elex 2 and elden ring aside, this is an amazing year for pc RPGs. We will also see if starfield will be as good as people (me including) hope.

The tone of this is hilarious. Such a plucky underdog!

Also (and not that they mention this game, but obviously they've been compared around here a ton), let's take a moment to chuckle at the irony of a game from FROM being in the role of the AAA Hollywood blockbuster. FROM games have been niche for 20 years.

If Nereida's love letter to ELEX II above can't convince you, nothing can.

Best value you'll get out of your €40 in a long time. Or €60 if you buy it on console. That's the one slight downside, when you get a triple-A production, you have to pay a triple-A price.

I think people are exaggerating this performance issue a bit. Yes, it's more power hungry than the first game, but textures and shaders are also much more detailed. I'm playing the game on my 6 years old Geforge 1080 with 1080p resolution, %120 scaling and at max settings and the game runs nearly 60 fps. Visuals are simply breathtaking and crisp at that level. It is definitely better than Elden Ring where they tried to hide low detailed textures with chromatic aberration and other visual tricks.

But I can't say the same for character animations. There is a certain stiffness in them, but not too gamebreaking for me.

It's pretty much a standart Piranha Bytes game. If you like that gameplay formula in their previous games then definitely play it. But some people complain about the over the shoulder camera. Camera is much more closer to the character now like in Gears games or the last God of War. So watch the gameplay a bit before buying it.

After watching 2-3 hours of the game I've concluded for now that the complaints about the camera are more "I fear change" stuff than anything genuinely bad about PB's new approach. Maybe I'll feel differently once I get around to playing the game myself, but that's not going to be anytime soon.

It definitely needs another patch. It's playable, but a lot of things could be improved.

I still hate the camera. The fact that there's no way to control which sides it skips to, or to make it static, is really annoying me. At least provide me with a hotkey that lets me swap it back to its default position (where the main character is a bit to the left).
