Gothic 2 or Chronicles

Hey all!

I've played Gothic 1 a while back but didn't quite finish it. Really enjoyed it. I'm considering playing Gothic 2, which is considered the best of the PB games by many (or most). At the same time, the Chronicles of Myrtana mod has some nice extra features and has received great reviews.

Do you recommend playing Gothic 2 or Chronicles of Myrtana first?

Also, if you respond with Gothic 2, do you recommend including the Returning mod? (or something else perhaps?)

No, don't use any mods like that your first time playing. It's already a big game with a lot of content.

Gothic 2 gold first, without mods except maybe DX11. Chronicles of Myrtana will spoil you if you play it first. Even though it's the same engine and most of the same assets, it incorporates 20 years worth of refinement that really shows.

Cool. Your answers thus far are pretty much what I expected (I visit RPGWatch nearly every day). Still, I wanted to make sure there isn't something I'm missing or an angle I hadn't thought of or read about.

Sweet. Thanks. I would definitely look into upping the graphics where possible. This saves me some time researching the options.
