Every aspect of this game looks enticing, except the combat. Looks way too chaotic and it seems you have very little control or influence other than the initial placement.
Still, if I didn't have such a backlog I might have given it a chance.

Looks like you need to return to Heroes of Might and Magic III then.
Then there's community addons like HOTA and WOG, there's just so much content it's ridiculous. I don't know how many hours I've spent on that game and I feel like I haven't seen half of it.

I honestly don't understand the hype for this game.
Quite frankly, you don't actually DO anything in combat. You just place your units and then watch the mayhem unfold.
Every now and again, maybe you cast a spell. That's it.
Combat is essentially an idle game.
The overworld/leveling aspect isn't bad, but it's a straight copy from HoMM…. so why not just play HoMM instead which has actual battles in which you have a tangible influence?
It also has campaigns and not just a skirmish mode…

That's one type of game I completely don't get: the idle genre.
The fact that 8-bit combat loop game that recently came out sold like 100,000 copies baffles me.

Nostalgia is a real phenomenon. If you can capture that lightening in a bottle, you're pretty much guaranteed at least a few sales, and if you truly strike gold, potentially a lot more. Simply being in the realm of HoMM three is impressive, at least to me.
