Default Rpg Maker??

January 14th, 2008, 08:27
I got a couple of questions regarding RPG Maker…

1) What is the latest software in Simple GUI (graphic user interface) non-script Rpg making?

2) Is there a software similar to RPG maker 3 (found in Playstation 2 console) for the Computer?

3) What is the best RPG making software?

Does NWN2 allow other systems than (A)D&D ?

If not, then it's not "neutral", and then wouldn't be my favourite choice (as an DSA lover).

I don't think there are any games with editors/RPG-maker type programs (with the ease of use that sean009 seems to want) that allow a complete rewrite of the ruleset. You'd need an engine with access to source code to do that.

Also, if the licensing of DSA is like that of D&D, it would be illegal to make an electronic game using the DSA rules.

Anyway, supposedly the Dungeon Siege engine is one of the most "morphable" ones, at least that's what the U5 Lazarus team mentioned as the reason they chose to make the mod for DS.

But still it's (A)D&D, and that's unfair to me.

Even if a gropup of developers got an official license for doing an DSA game with the NWN2 engine/editor, then it still would require the engine to be heavily modified.

What I don't quite understand, actually, is why they didn't build the whole system even more modular that an own engine could be swapped in ? THAt would've been truly universal !

But having to use a predefined ruleset is for me like having to eat something without allowing me to put salt & pepper on it.

Or, more cynically spoken, it's like an "hidden advertisement" for me. It's like making Star Wars fans wanting to buy a console because of an console-only Star Wars game.

A few years ago Bio promised to open up to Dragon Age be more flexible so you could change more core features.

As it is the NWN's can be modified quite heavily, it just takes a lot of patience. Value and damage of weapons for instance can have their 2da files adjusted and a lot of that sort of thing can be changed with scripting.

On my server, though it was definitely not AD&D, we chose to keep with as much as the system as possible and Role Play the setting. This proved very forward thinking as future patches would typically break the competition while we kept going.

There's other engines out there too like Tourque and the Elder Scrolls ones. The Dungeon Siege toolset I don't think was easy to work but Tiberius claims it was a lot more flexible. Ther is a toolset for Titan's Quest but there's no multiplayer or standalone server for it. The Witcher will have the Djinni toolset but that too will be a solo only thing (so far).

At the moment though, they're not even sure that they're going to release an editor at all ('course, they may have core features in accessible files even without an editor).

Well, there's RPG Maker for Windows.

But I would say producing any sort of quality result without scripting is impossible and a universal engine is a pipedream; you might as well grab Torque or some other rendering engine and do everything else. NWN is as easy as it gets and you still need scripting to do anything interesting.
