Patents on video game mechanics to strangle innovation, fun
March 10th, 2008, 15:59
Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I figured it would get the most viewing here:
ARS article on game patents
I already disliked the concept of software patents, but truth be told, a patent that prevents multiple MS Word clones probably isn't going to ruin my day. However, patents on game elements really burns me! The PC gaming market has enough problems as it is, and it's already enough of a gamble to sink a few million in a new title, now you have to worry that sure you might be successful, but what if we get sued?
The patent system in this country needs a SERIOUS overhaul.

I would imagine any patents on gameplay would be written to cover all the gaming systems the lawyers could think of so its not just a PC problem. It does seem ugly though, its not like we're seeing a lot of new ideas out there.

That's one big bad idea imo. The idea also seems like an anti-competitive measure.

There is a fine line between patenting unique ideas and processes and … well, for the lack of a better analogy, patenting "the production of melodic, rhythmic and harmonic processes by the combination of human vocal intonations, simultaneous production of tones by the pulling of metal-core drawn strands of varying thickness and length, and the striking of wooden objects upon tightly drawn materials wrapped around the diameter of a wooden or metal tube secured by metal rings".

Amazon got its's "oneklick" patented.
And an Australian person the actual wheel, according to the IG-Nobel prize web page.
It's just a matter of words. Of which both Lawyers and Bards are experts.
