Why leave joinable NPC's info off FAQs?
March 18th, 2008, 20:34
Just a bit of a pet peeve of mine I wanted to vent on after looking at the Age of Decadence FAQ on their website (and my apologies if the info is there and I missed it, but this seems to be a common occurrence).
I mainly prefer party based single player games. I don't play online, but I want more than one character to control.
So when I look up information for a new game, that's one of the first things I look for. However, rarely do I find whether it is single character or party based in the FAQs. Usually, it's answered in another thread. Sometimes there were be an FAQ entry on how many joinable npc's, but not always (So it's not like that's a great gage for it being party based).
I see lot's of FAQ's answered in the negative, so it's not like they only put out affirmative information.
So why do so few developers list whether the game is party based or not?

I think they
a) know the game so much that they just forget it
b) believe it doesn't matter
c) assume that the game is already the way people want it (sounds crude, I admit it), so more info can just be omitted

Maybe it has something to do with party-based games being so infrequent any more(at least I can't think of too many recent party-based rpgs) that its just assumed its a single player character.
I wonder if this trend is actually because that's what the market is asking for, or if its just easier and cheaper to make games with one central (usually male human) player character. I miss those games where you can roll up a 4-5 char party from scratch.

The AoD FAQ is the most detailed I've ever seen and it's no shame to miss a certain answer:

Thanks! I missed that, Amasius!
Margerette, I used to prefer being able to make their entire party (like Ultima III and IWD) but as the interactions between characters got more developed, I've like the joinable party. When done right, it just adds so much to the game.
I think it is probably monetary reasons why it is not as common anymore. Which is a shame.
