Default China earthquake

So horrible the number of dead keeps increasing! I was going to go to chongqing just 4 days later! I guess I would not go now! And originally I had planned to go there earlier! I am lucky myself. But I feel really sorry for all the people that died

Been awhile since last serious earthquake! Looks like a 7.8 one!

Yup, it looks pretty bad. My colleague's grandparents were in Chengdu; it seems the city itself is mostly OK but surrounding villages have been flattened.

Just saw this at The Guardian, 900 students buried, pretty horrific.

China's having a really rough time this year--the heavy snow problems earlier, and now this. Not good. You're very fortunate, GG, to have missed out on this one.

Edit: MSNBC is saying almost 9,000 dead. Terrible.

Awfull what happened there. I really hope no one on this site has relatives leaving overthere. A lot of death, but that could have been fortold. A lot of people live there and a it was a heavy Earthquake.
I was wondering: the scale of richter, does it goes to 10? or to 20? I assume 10 but never been sure

The Richter Scale has no limit.

The only limit is what people have actually experienced.

And what is possible because of the texture of the Earth (stones, minerals, conglomerates etc.) itself.

Still, there are practical limits: the strongest quakes observed have rated about 9.5. A 2 km asteroid hitting at 25 km/second would cause a 10.0 quake.

I have to stop and pray every time I hear about it or think of it. It is beyond my imagination.
