Fallout on Vista 64-bit… appears to work
Fallout on Vista 64-bit… appears to work
June 20th, 2007, 22:15
Caught up in the FO3 buzz, I broke out my ol' Fallout CD, without much hope that I'd get it to install, let alone run, on my current box -- Vista Ultimate 64-bit. (I was under the impression that Vista 64-bit isn't supposed to handle 16-bit installers.)
Guess what? It installed and appears to run just fine, sound and all. I run both the installer and the game in Win95 compatibility mode (the installer failed to start in regular mode). To my recollection, I had to jump through a quite a few more hoops to get it to run on WinXP. Downloading the patches now.
My vacation starts tomorrow, and I have a week before I'm traveling. Guess I know what I'll be doing in the meantime. It'll be interesting to see if it really *is* that good, or if time has gilded the memories. Vault 15, here I come…

nice!
I got DK1 running nicely the other day, nothing better than the re-assurance that an old beloved title will always be there for you..

i've just installed fallout but i can't seem to start it
the installer worked fine, but when i start the game it quits quite suddenly after the PLEASE WAIT screen appears and without any error messages
x64 vista here too
i tried without any compatibility settings and with win95, as admin all the checkboxes ticked

What a bummer. I just tried and mine still works. Vista x64 SP1. Win95 compatibility mode, no other boxes ticked, not as administrator. Perhaps you could try re-installing?
Note: Mine is installed on D:\Fallout, not C:\Program Files (x86). The path with the parentheses in it borks some old applications; sometimes all you need to do is install it somewhere else.

i installed it to e:\games\interplay\fallout
i installed it running the setup.exe as admin i also tried installing by running the autoplay.exe (autorun.exe?) as admin but no difference .. install finishes without any error i checked the windows event logger too nothing
i found a post mentioning audio issues? i have audigy if that matters
also: do you have any of the patches installed / does that matter?

I have all the patches, including the unofficial "community" ones. I don't recall whether I tried running it before installing the patches or not, so it's conceivable that they may make a difference. I have an X-Fi sound card, and have no audio issues with it.

i just wiped it .. reinstalled to d:\fallout, installed all 3 patches but the symptoms are the same
(I've set compatibility to win95 nothing else)
well i've even created a new user and turned off everything … there were like 5 processing running with that one and still same symptom .. game starts first screen shows for like 2s then it quits with no error message whatsoever
