Silver Sword Forging

I did the whole forging cut scene, it was mentioned many times in the dialogue that I didn't have all the pieces of the sword. I thought, "whatever, story device." Well, after the forging there is an extra piece of the blade unused in my inventory, the "mental bonuses shard." Anyone else have this happen? Does it mean anything?
