Default Looking for a Good Radio Station…

June 20th, 2008, 01:38
…to listen to online. Lately I seem to be spending a lot of time on the web, and the online version of our local classic rock station has turned to poo. Are there any online stations worth listening to or should I be changing to some other format? As always I turn to the tech savvy citizens of the Watch for help and advice.

I like classic rock, folk, some alternative rock (Cowboy Junkies) some metal(Beltane, Nightwish) old old country and bluegrass(pre-1990's Nashville pop) and classical. (Jaz I really enjoyed all the groups from your live event you posted a few months ago in the CL thread but I can't find them anywhere around here.) Soundtracks from CSI fascinate me but I don't know any of the artists because I am very very old.

Don't like industrial, hip-hop or rap. Otherwise I'm pretty flexible.

So what's everybody's favorite online listening?

Frequence 3 - Modern Rock/Pop. Best of, so to speak. Uplifting music, perfect to start a bright new day with. Listen to the stream via Ecoute -> Format Haut Débit -> … or via shoutcast.

Sky.fm - This is a collection of various stations that should have most of what you are looking for. Click on the genre titles for descriptions and artist examples. Be sure to indulge yourself in some genre exploring.

Live365.com

They've got seemingly half a million stations, some professional, many excellent, and some not-so-much. You can listen at a lower sound quality and with ads every 2 songs for free, or you can pay for a membership ($15 / 3 months) that yields better quality and no ads.

Many good stations. I HIGHLY recommend a station called Vertigo, but you can search stations by genre (or other ways) and then program ones that you like as presets.

Those are all awesome sites--this looks exactly like what I had in mind only more so. I've bookmarked them and look forward to a full, laid back exploration. I'll be very surprised if I can't find some really cool stuff this way.

And if anyone else has any faves, feel free to add to the list.

Thanks

I'm a classic rock lover myself.

Virgin classic rock is pretty good, you should check it out if you get a chance.

Well, I've had mixed results with the links. Virgin Radio and Sky.fm are the only ones I can listen to without downloading new media players and so forth. Fortunately, the Virgin link is excellent classic rock(thanks Lionhearted!) and SKY has a lot of choices in other kinds of music. (I've get DaTempo Lounge bookmarked.)

Anyway, thanks very much for the tips--if anyone else has any recs, I'm using windows media player.

But you do know that Windows Media Player has a radio browser, right? Choose "Media Guide" in the menus.

But for your convenience I've helped you a bit .

While I can't recommend the radio-station (far too much pop-music), here is a link to the web-stream of my favourite radio-show:

http://www.gong971.de/sendungen/rockzock.php

I hope the rock is classic enough though… it varies sometimes a lot what they play.

The moderators are sometimes very ambiguous, so careful with catching any phrases from them .

You can run Live365 thru Windows Media Player if you so desire. Installing their player, if you went that route, does not hijack your system. The player runs like any other program and WMP continues to be your default for everything else.

Glad you like it. It's a pretty good station, I've looked at a load of them and that is one of the better ones alright.
