X-Com Ufo2000 Tournament
August 8th, 2008, 12:03
There is a tournament about to start at abandonia for X-Com 2000. I never played the multi-player mod made for X-com1 until today and it wasn't that bad. It takes a little getting used to but it was easy to load and set up.
All of the details are here http://abandonia.com/en/forum?url=sh…ad.php?t=17667 The tournament starts in about two weeks. There are prizes for first second and third but they're "pieces of eight", I think they are some kind of token things for their forums but not really sure. The prizes don't really matter, it's just playing this old classic against real live humans that has me signing up. Anyways, if anyone is interested head on over and check it out.

X-com 2000 hmm, refresh my memory? is it like X-com just in multiplayer, or was it that terrible X-com game that got horrible ratings? I cannot remmember.
August 11th, 2008, 15:25
Pretty sure it's a user mod for X-Com1.
@GG- I don't remember X-Com:Apocolypse (X-Com3) getting horrible ratings. It wasn't well received because of the decision to switch from turn-based to real-time, but I remember most reviews being "meh" rather than specifically bad. Could you be thinking of the UFO:After* series, which did get slammed?

GG- if you're an X-Com fan, did you play this one?

It's got a few strange design decisions and the ending sucks rocks, but overall it's a very good (and largely faithful) re-creation of the original X-Coms.

The UFO: 2000 is a multiplayer mod to the original Ufo: Enemy Unknown aka X-Com1. I'm talking about the DOS one, the one a loooonnnnngggg time ago
This doesn't run in Dos mode, the ufo:2000 just needs the original DOS UFO:Enemy Unkown somewhere on your system and you can then you can play multiplayer. It works fine in XP, I don't know about Vista but I think it works.
I played ufo-extraterrestrials and it just didn't interest me like the original X-com or even UFO:After* I can't quite remember what it was but your right about how they made some strange decisions in gameplay. I think if I remember correctly it was a lot like X-com almost identical except for a few details that really bugged me about the game. I have forgotten what they were because I only played it for a few days. It was unfortunatly boring, imo. I really wanted to like that game even with all the bad reviews for it.

I'd bet your displeasure had to do with undying soldiers and not being able to hire/fire them. That took me a while to get my head around, but if you make the design decision for either half of that line, you're fairly well tied to the other half.
The game starts a bit slow, and the "final battle and victory scene" is a complete stinker, but everything in between was great fun for me.

glad to see you finished UFO:ET finally, DTE. I'm surprised you didn't like the ending. I loved it. Its kind of what I expected. We never did write that review which is something I've regretted.
I think the only reason the design changes were strange or hard to fathom for some people was that it was so much like the original. Eliminating the simple buying of agents as cannon fodder made a lot of sense to me. Where you couldn't micromanage your costs and they were automated though, that ticked me off.
--
Unfortunately, after UFO:ET I fired up X-Com and couldn't get past the VGA graphics. Too crude (or in my case, not crude enough) for me to want to play through again, although I loved it at the time.

The final battle itself was adequate, and I totally enjoyed the gauntlet leading up to it. My major complaint was, "Boom! Roll credits". I wanted a lot more from the final cutscene--I thought I'd earned it. Not sure what they should have done, but I know that wasn't it.

The ufo:aftersxxx is a whole another matter though. The first game alone was an insult to the whole series.

I remember the gripe with X-Com3 being that by trying to offer both RT and TB, they didn't do a great job with either. I played it thru to the end and had a good time with it, though.
I played the demo of the first UFO:After* and never came back.

Those looking for ufo style tactical combat with strategic layer should check the new jagged alliance that is in the works. Last I read its a faitful sequel except with only more modern graphics.
It was due to be released this quarter but they delayed the game two years more because of graphics? I thought it look aok allready. Damn publishers.

Games of the Jagged Alliance series center on strategically controlling mercenary squads, on and off the field, who fulfill various missions such as freeing countries from oppressive dictators. A sticky phrase describes these games as "X-COM with personality." They feature a unique mix of turn-based small arms battle simulation, 4X (eXpand, eXploit, eXplore and eXterminate) elements and role-playing.
In December 2006, Strategy First outsourced Jagged Alliance 3 again. The publisher along with Akella and F3games, both Russian developers, will create the game. It now appears the game will be once again delayed. Planned release date was in third quarter of 2008, however Akella's website now shows the release date Q1 2010. This is probably due to publishers demand to improve graphics.[10]
Planned features:
* Realistic damage models for characters and structures.
* Non-linear mission basis.
* Varying weather conditions.
* Coop and multiplayer modes.
* Four different sides to choose from.
The original series was published by sir-tech the developers of wizardry series.
* ROLE PLAYING AS GOOD AS IT GETS: A totally new storyline in a dynamic environment, where every action affects the fate of the region!
* STRATEGY AS NEVER BEFORE: The various factions and the fog of war make things… complex. Luckily, you'll get back-up - if you don't get them killed!
* TACTICS UNLIMITED: Ambush, use suppression fire and use stealth to penetrate the unseen! These are only a few of the new tactical choices you have at your disposal using a single easy to use function that's based on context.
