I does not happen very often but I have treated myself to a more expensive toy. A LG OLED 65 inch GX. As an OLED, and with HDR finally working, gaming just took on another new level. It is just fantastic, and big. Boy, is it big. I wanted a more reasonable 55 inch first, but the 65 inch was only 200 euro more. I hope I don't regret it with all the talk about burn-in (hoping to do 15 years with it). I sit about 3.5 meters away which seems to be ok.
Yes, I think the top screens with true HDR levels are genuinely impressive, with the proper source. I'm still a bit wary of burn-in for using one as a gaming monitor. I suspect you could get away with it for some games, but for an RPG fan, where there's a lot of static elements, I think it could still be a problem, even with the mitigations. As you say, I don't mind spending a bit of coin on the good stuff, but I do want good equipment to last.
