Fun and addictive little game. It's simplistic in some ways yet has a good deal of depth and plenty of strategy to it.

It's not the deepest RPG for story even though there is a story.

The town building also isn't super deep but it's a nice little side thing that helps drive your party/parties - some of your skills, items, promotions, and other stuff are tied to it, adding a little bit of a strategic layer.

Managing multiple parties at once and the idea of needing multiple parties (kind of like raids, I guess) for some dungeons and quest/story pieces is interesting (haven't got far enough to try this yet but there are some multi-party dungeons for as low as 5th level). My 2nd party is *almost* high enough to try the lowest of these I've found.

The highlights IMO are the combat, exploration, and character development via skills and gear.

The combat is like MMX or old FF/Mordor/Wizardry style games - turn based with a good amount of options. Every class has a good variety of skills and choices. Mobs have different elemental resistances so it's not quite as formulaic as something like MMX

One of the cool parts of the game is that everything is randomized - the land, the dungeons, the loot - and it works really well. There are side quests and events that occur along with the more static main quest(s). So every time you start a new game you have a fresh world to explore full of fresh content. Pretty slick how it all works.

There's a solid variety of base classes and promotions, with promotions being limited to what structures you build or control (you build your own town but can't build/upgrade every structure, and there are neutral towns you can incorporate as you quest for them and gain their trust kind of thing). Each class gains some skills as they level (you choose) and you can also obtain skills and other goodies from buildings in your town or some structures in the wild that can't be built.

The UI is pretty solid - does everything it needs to with some conveniences (favorites for skills you can optionally use, in dungeons you can do some automoving over already visited ground, exit to world out of completed dungeons). Inventory management can get a little crazy when you're juggling gear between multiple parties. You have a shared inventory between ALL parties (magical banking of sorts) that helps but swapping gear between your A and B and C and possibly D teams is a workout (not sure how that could be easier, you control a lot of characters).
