Overseer's Log - 14th Timber, 1052, Late Autumn

It will be winter soon. A lot has happened.

Some dwarven Merchants from Degël âtast visited us and I was happy
to trade with them for they brought some usefull goods with them.
I traded some trinkets we had crafted for things like wood and a
few barrels of booze. My comrades kept telling me we already
had enough alcohol. They seriously thought I was gonna
watch a barrel of booze walk out of here?!
Over my dead grandma (the one with the black beard)!

Ustuth Datanakgos, our woodcutter, started acting strange a
bit earlier.. then suddenly he went completely mad. He has not
had anything to eat or drink in ages. I'm affraid this will not end well.

z04_shot3.png

z04_shot4.png

I am now happy with the amount of traps in our entrance corridor.
We also decided to put a few outside the fortress just next to the
entrance, as we were going outside anyway to get some more wood.
I had our soldiers patrol the area in case some wild animals
would feel a burning need to become rawmaterial for a pair of gloves.

While digging for more coal to fuel the smelters our miners
found some other usefull materials too. Perhaps some good luck
for gatelightning at last?

z04_shot7.png

Just as I was beginning to get my hopes up tragedy struck us
again. The river is tainted with dwarven blood and the entrance to
our fortress is covered in vomit. A small group of migrants showed
up only to get eaten by a pack of alligators. Half of them died while
the others made it. I did not want to send my men to meet them
as I felt they were not ready yet to face a whole pack of those
alligators. Besides, if those cursed migrants can't even make it here
alive in the first place - they are propably not worth it anyway.
We did kill one alligator though as it came a bit too close to the
fortress entrace. The migrants brought cows too which, interestingly,
were left more or less unharmed by the alligators.

Well, on the positive side - this does help us keep the head count lower as
it is getting a bit crowded already. Also, maybe the nobles will think twice
before coming here to try boss us around.

That was awesome! More! More! -- Also looks like a nice vein of coal there. Where did you find it?

I can't wait 'til someone wants to besiege Gatelightning. Between those defenses, the sealable and floodable entrance area, and the alligators it ought to be a real party!

The coal vein was almost right below the one you had already depleted.

Let's play this one as long as it takes, I wanna see what happens too :D

Just realised there's ... 3 players before me? I have lots of studying to do when it hits my turn :p Just gotta pull all those levers and see what they do...

Hee hee.

Here's a bit of news from Outpost Asdegadil "Drumwalled:" my dwarves just finished construction of their very own indoor waterfall:

waterfall.jpg

It's actually slightly tricky to do because of hydrostatic pressure -- I flooded one fortress because the water came in faster than it ran out. This one is stable, though, and the dwarves like it a lot. I set it up so I can build a well in the same room, over the running water downstairs.

The "lovely waterfall" even comforted one of my miners who lost a friend to tragedy (burned up in a horrible magma engineering accident).

Overseer's Log - 1st Granite, 1053, Early Spring

Spring has come and it seems that fortune is finally on our side.
Winter has passed and I am both tired and relieved.

We still had our share of sorrow though - Ustuth Datanakgos has
passed away. However, we knew to expect it and, in a way,
it was a relief. I know now that the demons that tormented him
from within are no more. Watching him running around babbling like
a lunatic was far more depressing than seeing him finally at peace.

z05_shot1.png

Endok Atîsåm, our mechanic, had some sudden episode of
inspiration - he locked himself in the mechanics workshop and
when he finally came out he had some strange mechanism with him
that isn't like anything I've seen before. I was so impressed
that I got a bit inspired too... So I ordered the dwarves to build
more traps.

z05_shot4.png

The former overseer, Oltarked, has been creating masterpieces
one after another and he seems to be doing really well.
That strange look he had in his eyes last year is gone and he
seems vigorous and.. well.. he is acting like a dwarf again.
And those statues... they are truly awesome!

z05_shot5.png

We have some new friend at the gates. It seems like a pack of
elephants have claimed the outside entrance area of our fortress.
They triggered some of the traps we laid there. Hopefully it hurt a lot.
I am so happy we built a hatch on the entrance and locked it.

Life inside the fortress has been really nice and peacefull. We have
been working our arses of, but that is only a good thing. In fact,
it has been so peacefull that I found myself some time for romance too.
Minkot Razormutes is a fine female miner. A true dwarven woman. I've never
been happier.

z05_shot7.png

Speaking of romance, Olon Bubnusathel the peasant and one of our swordsdwarves,
Udib Dumatanam are way ahead of us. Yes, that's right - Gatelighting witnessed
the birth of our first dwarven baby. She had some trouble walking at first,
but once she started consuming dwarven wine at the pace of her parents -
walking was no longer problematic. We are all very proud her.

z05_shot8.png

z05_shot9.png

The good news do not end there. Our miners have been hacking away stone like
maniacs and it has finally paid off. They hit a major vein of coal quite near
the floodgate farms. I'm gonna keep doing the smithing thing for quite some time.

Yes.... With all these things going on both in our fortress and in my
personal life, I feel the time has come for me to step down. I have been
contemplating this for a while now.
I am contented with what I... no.. We have achieved during this very tough but
ultimately rewarding year.

But I am tired now and I want to concentrate on the more simple things in life.
Spring has come in the outside world and I feel that it is spring also in the
lives of all the Gatelightning dwarves. All my comrades seem very satisfied and
we are all doing our part with the best of our abilities.

Best of luck to the next overseer, Zakhary Dastlikot signing off.
Who knows... perhaps we will meet again.

Awesome, a good year for Gatelightning! Thanks for the updates, Zakhary! You leave a successful fortress, but I wonder what consequences the fate of those humans and elves may have...

Babies? I guess there's not much else to do in a sealed cave. ;)

I'm enjoying the heck out this. Keep up the good work, folks!

What a let-down: we were promised phucked-up, and we have a roaring success. And, of course, elephants. ;-)

Congratulations for a job well done. Looking forward to what KazikluBey gets up to!

I'm browsing through this thread ... And I must say that I'm still undecided.

As though I love this game (from the descriptions) for its original and creative design, I despise the odd look of the graphics - and that although I played Nethack for quite a while !

I'm just waiting for a graphical representation of what goes on there, *then* I'll be happy ! :)

Heretic! Activate the flushing system - PULL THE LEVER!!
No.. wait... It's not my turn anymore :(
Which, by the way, means that I'm gonna have to start a new fortress
just by myself.
But seriously. Just try out the game, man. After a while you're not gonna give
a damn how the game looks. No, really.. You won't.
I remember seeing a project ... ah here it is : http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/~mayday/files/dwarf_show.png
Maybe someday it will look like that ;), but what I would really like to see improved is the interface and mouse input support.
Hopefully it will never look like that. It's great as it is now, everything is clearly
and nicely represented.
I would hate to see the guy waste time on improving the graphics or streamlining the interface.

It would be very nice if we could do all the general Dwarf Fortress discussion in
this thread http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4032&page=6 for example. Just to keep the Gatelightning thread devoted to Gatelightning.

Two screens of the fortress in 3D (using an external program) and corresponding 2D shots (with the default graphics, I find them much easier to "read" than the mods):
dwfortentrancexw9.jpg

(looking northeast) It's a nice, dramatic landscape, with a waterfall nestled behind the cliffs.

The pink circle shows the hatch on the hole-in-the-ground entrance.

dwfortlvl2qi2.png

The large rooms to the left in the 3D version and to the right in this 2D version are merely the remains of a mining operation.

I chose a "Peasant" dwarf with no skills whatsoever who I suspect came in with the last immigration wave.

1st Granite, 1053, Early Spring Overseer's Log - Kazik Lenodurdim signing in.
By Lur Edir Orshar, this is madness! They chose me to be their new overseer. And they hardly even know me, I came with the latest group of migrants. I need to get out of here - I need to separate myself from these lunatics, yet I daren't go outside or I'll surely be eaten by a crocodile or a skeletal carp or an undead elephant or some other beast. No, I must dig. No, they shall dig me out of here. That's better. I've never held a mining pick in my life. Only my cow calf pet, Tun, shall join me and we shall live free and happy ever after in a cave of our own.

It's time to find a good spot and get to work.

I have had the plans for an "expansion" made known and my new cavern of freedom is being dug out. Or would be if it wasn't for that huge coal field that is keeping the miners busy. I have no need for coal though, so I'll reassign the miners to more pressing matters.

I've made a point of keeping even the slackers to work. The mechanic Endok Atîsåm for example claimed that he had been ordered by an overseer to not do any hauling, even when he had no mechanical work to do. Appalling! And the old overseer Zakhary had claimed the same privilege for himself, but I set that record straight soon enough. It's my turn to take it slow now.

On the 9th Granite an elven caravan knocked on the hatch. I would have liked to keep up my predecessor's little tradition regarding foreign traders, but it seemed like the "drainage system" he built is full of water and I didn't want to risk having the our only exit permanently flooded (what if I'm overthrown before I get myself walled up?) - so I just kept the us locked down for now. I might go about creating a drainage pipe to the lower river instead of expanding the current useless cistern. Later.
dwfort4hk9.png

'PJ' Oltarked keeps working and working and is creating masterpiece after masterpiece. It's getting on my nerves. I told him to create a dozen statues instead. They'll come in handy soon.

Buggrit, a huge magnetite vein was found in the new rooms. I guess I'll have to wait a while with moving in.
dwfort7fh0.png

On the 28th Granite another bunch of vagrants came waltzing in like they owned the place. At the same time a goblin snatcher entered the above-ground area - and was swiftly eaten by a jaguar. Who said wild animals are necessarily a detriment to society?

In the middle of the month of Slate, woodcraftess Mestthos Geshudlaz locked herself up in her bedroom and refused to come out. She refused to say why, and the muffled mumblings we were able to make out were impossible to understand.
