Default 90% Consoles? Looking at Preorders

November 1st, 2011, 18:21
According to VGChartz Skyrim has a little over a million and a half preorders:

13 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC 183,265

9 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PS3 350,613

3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim X360 966,417

My mediocre math skills say that only 12% of preorders are on the pc, so Todd really might not have been exaggerating much when he said 90% of Oblivion's sales were on the console. I'm not sure if VGChartz can pull Steam preorders though. If not, then these numbers are vastly skewed in favor of consoles….

VGChartz is:
a) retail only (no digital sales and I once read that Amazon and other online only stores sales aren't counted either)
b) US retailers only (no Europe pre-orders, they usually get the number for Europe much later)

PC digital sales account for about %50 of PC sales and some industry specialist claim it's now well over that now (his claim is 6 digital sales for 1 retail, but I don't believe him).

This. The PC digital sales which are not disclosed to the public are going to be higher than the PC packaged retail sales included in the vgchartz pre-order totals.

And here is the study published by NVIDIA which reports that PC digital downloads are already vastly outselling PC packaged retail discs: http://techgage.com/articles/editori…_trends_07.png

Why?

You plug it, in turn it on, put the DVD in the drive and Bam, you're playing. No drivers, no tweaking, no configuration routine before you start playing.

It doesn't get any easier than this.

This is a secret between you and me, the xbox 360 sales numbers a low when you compare them to the old Nintendo and Playstation results…

?I don't get consoles either. I have both but I'll buy mine for the PC. I think it looks better and the plus for me is modding. So far as I know no mods for consoles.

Not sure if I shouldn't get a modern console (my newest still is a PS2) after reading about the EA Origins sniffer. Not for Skyrim, too late for that, but … you know.

Yeah, and you also get a lower resolution, less options, and no modability.

DVD? what is that? Some sort of optical disc? Sounds archaic.

I loathe the xbox360 controller and all console controllers in general and I just don't feel a connection to the game on the couch.

This is my thought exactly! I prefer to play on the desk and chair with keyboard and mice

I prefer to game on my sofa with laptop connected to HD projector.

I use a wireless trackball mouse and numpad with extra buttons for gaming.

I recently tried a Logitech wireless gamepad for a couple of games and it was very convenient, but I got cramps in my hands after about 30 minutes.

I think the last gamepad I used was for 8-bit NES many years ago - I guess I don't have those kind of muscles in my hands anymore.

I like my PS3, but given the choice I'd always buy for my PC first. Heck, the only reason I even got the ps3 was that RDR didn't come out for the PC! I see it as having a choice between driving a Yugo and a Mercedes….who'd pick the friggin' Yugo?!?!?

That's just no longer true many console games also get patched. I was playing a patched new vegas long before my brother was able to play his console version.

I can't remember the last new release pc game that didn't work for me right out of the box. I keep my drivers and software current, protect and take care of my pc and upgrade as needed. I guess to some people this would seem like extra work but I enjoy it so for me it's not.

If you have your games on steam or impulse your games are updated automatically just like a console. Except it does it in the background so you don't need to wait everytime you put in the disc to play.

I have no problem if people want to play on consoles but I get tired of hearing how easy and trouble free they are compared to pc's. If you know how to take care of your pc gaming on them is no problem.

Consoles are becoming more of a hassle now with internet support. Dev's now release games with bugs knowing they can patch them just like they've been doing for pc. I don't play my ps3 often, mainly for sports games but every time I use it it has to update and seems even if it's small it takes for ever. When I bought madden it had to update several times and took almost 2 hours.

You don't understand consoles ? Well i much rather have the PC version, but i can understand people who want consoles also.

PRO console:
- Skyrim in a 32'' TV > Skyrim in a 19'' PC screen even with lower resolution on console.
- Skyrim with no driver problems > Skyrim with multiple driver problems (possibly, not stating it will be extra bad in the PC, i'm just comparing to Oblivion, people might be afraid)
- No need to invest in hardware for 4 years now, xbox is xbox!

PRO PC:
- Skyrim in 2 months after launch with modding > Skyrim in consoles with little chance of modding
- Skyrim with mouse and keyboard > Skyrim with controler
- Better graphics overall if you have an average/good PC

I much rather have skyrim on PC, but only because i have a fairly potent PC and a 27'' Screen. If i had a lower end PC and a 19'', i would rather play on xbox 360 and a large TV screen to be perfecly honest.

One the advantages consoles have over PC's is not needing to constantly upgrade for the latest and greatest game. You buy a console and it will play every game that is ever made for it. Period. I have a lot of friends that are long time PC gamers, but for their kids, they buy them consoles to keep the costs down.

According to Bethesda, in order to run Skyrim on "Low" PC settings at 1920x1080 (which is going to look a lot better than console settings at 1280x720), all you need is:

ANY DX9 graphics card with 512MB video memory
Dual Core CPU 2.0GHz
2GB RAM
