Default win 10 tips please

November 29th, 2018, 16:32
Bought myself new desktop for xmas which came with Win10. Right off the bat I was horrified… turned off everything I could find that was torn-offable. Default fonts are horrible - my text under win7 was smaller but easier to read. Everything is super contrasted, the whites burn my eyes! Is that a win 10 thing or display driver?
How can I de-Win 10 this thing as much as possible?

I'm unsure what is the exact problem there as I don't have fonts/contrast problems on my side since the day I've installed win10 (didn't change absolutely anything OS visuals related defaults so it could be something along the card/driver/monitor side).

I do have eyeburning whiteness in MS Office 2016 though. That could also be my monitor issue (it's TN and not IPS) but I've learned to ignore it over time.

EDIT:
Maybe this can help:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/…or-update.html
I just found out what the problem was: the windows update for some reason changed the Nvidia's card configuration to use "limited" output dynamic range instead of "full".
EDIT2:
You're onto something it seems, there is some new nvidia driver bug:

My suggestion is to dual boot with Linux, which becomes your main OS, and only boot into Windows for gaming sessions. The really easy way to do it is to buy a separate disk for Linux, and use a gadget like this to choose which disk to activate at boot time.

https://www.amazon.com/Kingwin-Optim…/dp/B00TZR3E70

Doing it with a simple hardware switch removes any of the difficulties that can arise trying to do it with a software boot menu, and removes any risk of the OSes interfering with each other.

Rip that crap out of your computer, immediately! That is my advice. There is no cure to windows 10, unfortunately.

Unfortunately you can't as a lot of new games will require Win 10. Mostly due to Microsoft requiring everyone to update to Win 10 just to use DX12.

I’ve never had a problem with windows 10. I’m not very picky though as long as I can surf the web and play games then it’s fine.

Horror it is.

I wasn't even aware of it (not playing games much due lack of time), but several recent nVidia drivers can cause "The Witcher 3 BSOD":
https://forums.geforce.com/default/t…pool-caller/1/

Today's driver hotfix did address some issues (bad memory reporting, color format issue and videoplay in edge) but seems TW3 BSOD is still unsolved:
https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/do…ix-driver.html

WTF is nVidia doing? Testing a driver with World of Warcraft only?

I don't know much about win10, but I know there's a long term service branch which doesn't have a lot of the junk and doesn't get updated as often.

I'm still on win7, but I would be interested to see some tips how to turn win10 into an OS I'd be happy using.
