Screenrant checked out Genshin Impact:

Genshin Impact Review: Must-Play Open World Magic

Genshin Impact offers players a beautiful open-world, satisfying and unique combat, and a colorful cast of characters in a one-of-a-kind action RPG.

The isekai genre of manga, anime, and video games has long fascinated its fans, all too often leaving them wishing they had been spirited away to the same fantastical land they're viewing. The beautiful setting of Genshin Impact's Treyvat is no different. Genshin Impact whisks its players away to a massively open-world that houses a compelling and unique storyline. The visually impressive adventure RPG offers a refreshing take on a mix of genres, and one of the most satisfying combat systems in recent memory.

[…]

All in all, Genshin Impact is a fantastic adventure RPG that feels like the first season of everyone's favorite anime. Treyvat is a gorgeous world that challenges consumer perception for what should be expected from "free" gaming experiences. While it may not have the finest coat of polish that AAA titles can offer, Genshin Impact rivals some of the best adventure titles on the market, and is a must-play for everyone to see if it's a good fit on both their mobile devices and PC/PS4 if available.

If I'm correct… The game has no price, however:
1. Does have lootboxes you can buy for real $
2. Does have pretend currency to confuse kids on the actual lootboxes price
3. Has an option so a kid can steal a card and spend $100-0.01 no questions asked

4.5 my arse.
Now lemme install it and spend instantly a mortgage on this "almost perfect" whatnot, almost if you ask casino owners ofc.

Quite so. You can get everything in the game through slow (and unreasonable) grind, and it's all set up to shortcut through paying real currency.

Technically, you don't have to. However, the most powerful characters and weapons are also locked behind spending a lot of "gacha rolls", about 0.6% probability of getting one per roll. You get a few for free as you play, but if you wanna really have a decent shot at getting nice characters or weapons, again, wallet time.

The game itself is beautiful, the world is huge, seamless and charming. But the monetisation model itself is a big scam, that otherwise is very typical in most mobile/tablet games.

According to PC Gamer, you can ignore those "best characters and weapons" just fine as this is a single player game. As long as what you've got is good enough to deal with the enemies at hand, you shouldn't need to bother.

They've still got to get you SOMEWHERE, though. When I can't see for sure how the developers are getting paid, I start to worry.

I played the first 25 hours and it is a lovely game.

I've not paid anything and up until now my party is leveling fast enough without any grinding. Experienced RPG-players should have no problem to play this game without paying a dime.
Maybe the need to buy something will come later, but you can enjoy this game with some nice gameplay-mechanics at least for 50 hours or so. The game is bug-free, runs fast even on older hardware and the loading times are acceptable as well.
Story and characters are well written like a fairytale. (Alrik - your turn!)

@Zloth - there are always enough non-patient gamers who want to level fast and pay for all the gimmicks.

Indeed, they'll get money from people who want to get their awesome new character/weapon and max them out in the snap of a finger. Any game that has that kind of feature will make a lot of money, because a lot of people have more money than patience.

Every mobile game follows this formula, even the ones that are "single player". The "gem" currency is all over the place, and it's proven and successful.

That said, Genshin is indeed a beautiful game, I've played around 15 hours myself even as I speak negatively of its monetization choices. It's just fair to warn people that when they get to higher level, they'll maybe want some specific character that caught their eye, and they'll either have to live without, or spend a substantial amount of real money to first obtain it, and then bring it up to speed with the content you're currently doing without having to grind another 20 hours just for that, because as it's also typical in this kind of gacha systems, XP/levelling costs spike exponentially as you go higher, and at some point become nearly ridiculous to progress by just grinding every character you like.

Typical microtransactions bait.
Just wait till without warning trashmobs levelscale upwards in your game (adv. level 20) and your equipment and actual character levels remain low.
Then the game will open you repeatable dungeons so you can grind till doomsday… Or pay up. Classic schemes.

PCGs mmo silly shills.
There is a paid hero with pulling AoE ult (360°, huge distance), you use it, then slam all trashmobs at one spot with your best DPS. Pay2win.

It's not a game. The game is only a shiny package in this product.
Underneath it is a gambling machine.

EDIT:

Please, if you can't resist the temptation "just one more spin", stay far away from this product. It's designed to lure you in.
Yes I know it's not rated M (mature).

The gambling mechanics should automatically mean M(18+) rating. I see how tempting even plain microtransactions are for my kids so these mechanics are strong no-go for me.

I think the key with this game is to know what it is going in, so the video above is really helpful.

I know I'd prefer to pay 50$ for a complete game, rather than free-to-play gatcha. But then, Genshin is somewhat reminiscent of full-price XenoBlade Chronicles 2 which had a similar gatcha (but no microtransactions) for characters.

So far, I've played for about 10-15 hours. I've enjoyed my time with the game and will play a bit further. I know at some point it'll probably get tough, and at that point I'll need to think hard about continuing. Again, know this going in.

But it is also worth thinking. For a 10-15 hour game I'd be happy to pay 20-30$. So far I've spent nothing. Buying a few things doesn't seem entirely unreasonable. You just have to control yourself, and I know that's tough.

It's also worth saying that you *can* get lucky. So far, I've only used in-game-earned resources, and done the "starter" pass twice, and the "venti" pass once. I've got five or six characters so far, no repeats, and a couple of four star weapons. One of my characters (first Venti pass) was the highly rated 5-star QiQi that the guy got eventually in the 600$ video above. Apparently he's good - I haven't tried him yet.

My point is, it's entirely luck (just like Xenoblade 2 was). But also, you don't need these chars to play the game. Indeed, to me, it makes more sense to play with the story characters. Why, for example, would I play with a character who is still an NPC questgiver? It makes no sense if the story hasn't yet introduced that character to me.

Perhaps I'm applying too much logic too it, but explore the game, do the quests, level up gently, find chests/loots, power-up your gear within the in-game systems, and you have a nice game. Just know that eventually it'll get tougher, and be willing to leave at that point, or "git gud". Or, spend money, sensibly, but as with all gambling, set your limit, and stick to it.

Easier said than done, though.

PS, I should probably say that what I *have* played has been extremely high quality. One of the my "games of the year", but highly tempered by the knowledge that it'll probably sour later due to free-to-play-barriers. I'm glad I've played (and am playing), but wish the experience wasn't tarnished by an expectation of barriers ahead.

Qiqi is the top tier healer:
https://genshin.gg/tier-list

The problem with the story characters you want to force in your game, as you can see on that table, neither is DPS which makes them lacking when it comes to area or waves clearing.

However after a certain point in the game you'll unlock Spiral Abyss a sort of arena with floors. There are 9 of those floors, each has several chambers (I think 5, but to unlock 4th and 5th you must max the first three).
Anyway, upon completing the third chamber on the third floor you get Xiangling who is a very good DPS (fire). For free.

Another freebie is Barbara who is an awsome healer (water), but it's a limited event:
https://www.siliconera.com/genshin-i…rned-for-free/
You'll want her because cc stun aka freeze in combo with Kaeya (ice) who is a story hero.

About spending money, noone said you shouldn't. But if you're buying something, you need to see what are you paying for. If you don't know what you've bought, that's gambling.
