It made the game easier to start, which is something PB games are often blamed for. I guess that's why they decided to make it this way.

I'm guessing there's probably more than meets the eye there. PB has always been pretty good with having a balance of skills among different factions.

I'm interested in finding out more about the Morkons. They look like a splinter group of Outlaws to me. Also, wasn't that Nasty with them in the factions trailer?

I have to say though, PB is terrible at naming things/characters. Morkons? Skyands? Who comes up with this shit?

They really didn't though. They just needed to place one faction closer to where the player starts out for obvious reasons. The factions are different enough that most people are going to have a pretty clear idea of who they want to be fairly early on.

It was tough in Risen before you joined a faction, but after that you could do the harder content.
But in Elex it wasn't just about distance, but also a lot of level and stat gates and hinderances. It was easier for me with the zone gating from Risen - each faction had their island in Risen 3 and in Risen 1 it felt like all quests were adjusted according to your chosen path - if you wanted to be a mage, you went to a city and did the few quests for the local priest - all of those quests there were easier than when you went there as a soldier of the order. I think it was because of those chapters.
But I was unable to join clerics in Elex (I missed the kidnapping)
And the level/stat gating in everything - did they get rid of it in Elex 2?

The Morkons are the complete opposite of the Outlaws though. The Outlaws are anarchists but the Morkons are extremist zealots with strict rules.

There are definitely similarities on the surface though because the Morkons also build their weapons from scrap metal and stuff like that.

I have to say though, PB is terrible at naming things/characters. Morkons? Skyands? Who comes up with this shit?
We can thank Bjoern for that . He is the main writer for ELEX and ELEX 2. He also wrote like 80% of the dialogue by himself.

To be honest, I feel like they should hire at least one professional writer again to help him with consistency and structure.
Not only are the (German) subtitles (even the intro!) full of spelling errors and convoluted writing but the entire beginning sequence of the game is pretty messy in general.

First Jax tells Adam that he does not care about the Skyands who are destroying all living beings in Magalan (sure, Jax, who cares if everyone dies, right? ). The most important thing for him is finding his son Dex. Adam is like "yeah, sure, dude you go find sonny and if you change your mind then come see me at my bastion of the 6th power up north".
Then Jax meets Caja five minutes later. Caja is busy hunting down Morkons and she doesn't care about the Skyands either. They argue a bit and all of a sudden Jax does seem to think that the Skyand issue should not be totally ignored anymore.
Then Caja suddenly changes her mind and delegates the task of hunting down the Morkons to Jax in spite of remarking just a minute ago how weak Jax is looking after he received the bite from one of the Skyanides in the intro. Like… w-h-a-t?

The characters and their motivations are all over the place. The timeline of events is pretty unclear and everyone is behaving very odd in the face of certain destruction as the intro would have us believe. The threat is just not tangible at all.

So, no matter how much Bjoern is enjoying his multitasking of jobs (project lead, writing, vision keeper, music/sounds etc.), I wish he would hire someone to help him with the writing as that is definitely not his strong suit.

Are you talking about stat requirements for weapons? I assume there will still be requirements, but it's been mentioned that your stats will also affect damage output. i.e higher strength means more damage in melee, etc. That's how it worked in Gothic/Risen but not in Elex 1 for some reason.

You could join them by just going there as well.

Really ? Clerics told me to go away at the gate - I will have to re-read some guide about it.
Nothing against stats requirements, what I meant is how a bit random it was and how high - it was so hard to create a build for me - I will have to search for some guides again if I want to try again.
And the levels - like players do want hard non scalable mobs in tough areas, but during a quest for smugglers before gates of clerics - the level of those ordinary mobs I was suppose to kill was too high - it was level of whole zone maybe?
But I'm glad stats will mean something again.

EDIT:
I just loved the freedom of Risen island with chapters levels - I know it wasn't realistic, but I could really join anyone, even city mages if I wanted to. And the city was still harder for me when I arrived on higher level.
I don't know how to solve that in a different way than scalling based on where you are at the story - if those are entry quests. Then you can be noob, live in a city and still being able to do something there?

If I recall correctly, I tried a demo out for a bit, but you are correct sir, basically I didn't really play the game at any sort of length.

Keep asking. There are dialogue options to get in without doing any quest.

The unworthy peasants from the Codex have apparently received a preview beta key for ELEX 2 . If it is true what that infidel has posted there then it looks like we might get quite a flood of press on 12/6 (the German Nikolaustag ) since it is unlikely that the Codex out of all places got exclusive dibs.

The real question then is why didn't a known PB supporting site like the Watch get one as well? Catering to the peasants is NOT the way to go when the cognoscenti are available!!

Indeed! But… did y'all ask?

The Codexians may be pesky peasants but apparently they are clever little critters who know where to ask for handouts.

Meh not surprised as the Codex has a larger user-base and insider connections.

Playing the beta might be a good way to feel special, but as a way to actually play a game it leaves something to be desired.

I feel like it might of been better if there was an NPC for the outlaws/clerics that led you in the right direction if you wanted to join one of those. Or maybe they could at least describe how to get there. It could be gated behind an appropriately themed quest for the faction as well - there was already a few of these in Goliat.

PB wanted to make the factions more antagonistic in ELEX. In their previous games it never went far beyond "yeah those guys suck a little, you better stay away from them just because". There was never any real sense of enmity between the factions. PB wanted to change that for ELEX by making it feel more like the factions are really at odds with each other or even at war.

That is why the Cleric in Goliet was "under cover"… well, at least in theory… it was maybe a bit weird how he trusted Jax after two minutes and told him about his true allegiance .

You also found out about the Clerics right when you met Duras since one of the very first quests is to investigate what happened to the Clerics patrol.
You are robbed by an Outlaw in the very intro of the game and you meet an Outlaw in the immediate vicinity of Goliet. Then there is also the quest by the Berserker head honcho (Ragnar) to go explore the other factions.

It would seem to me like there are enough hints that you don't have to join the Berserkers right away. Besides, you have to actually successfully finish many quests before Ragnar will allow you to join. I felt it was the longest(?) quest chain among the factions.

That said, PB definitely wanted players to join a faction early in ELEX. That is one reason they got rid of the classic chapters where you have a world state reset after each chapter. PB did not want players to do the typical PB game thing where you delay joining a faction until you have done every single quest and exhausted all content… and have maybe even killed every single monster in the world in chapter one.

This plan probably didn't work particularly well because many players (myself included) still played the game the old way where you try to finish as many quests as possible before advancing the story. It seemed like a necessity for me, too, since I played on 'ultra' difficulty.

Consequently, it seems like they have admitted defeat and given up on making players join a faction early in ELEX 2. Not only is there a factionless path for the first time in a PB game now but Bjoern has also repeatedly emphasized the total sandbox-like freedom you have in ELEX 2.

He's a big rpg player. Finished all of pathfinder recently and many other games.

He has his over the top moments, but overall quite a fun streamer.
