PC Gamer looks back at Baldur's Gate:

20 years ago, Baldur's Gate made Dungeons & Dragons cool again

Looking back at a pivotal moment for computer RPGs, D&D, and a little company called BioWare.
It's sometimes said that Baldur's Gate made RPGs cool again. But it had plenty of competition for that honor. 1998 landed in the half of the decade that gave us Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, a glimpse of another world in Final Fantasy VII (even if the original PC port was one of the worst things you could inflict on your computer that wasn't a virus), and saw Diablo hitting a level of success that continues echoing through the industry today.

A better claim is that it made Dungeons & Dragons cool again--that is almost impossible to deny. It both put the series back on track on PC, and ensured that much of what followed continued to owe a debt to those halcyon days of tabletop dice rolling.

Lost track of how many times I replayed the whole series from the original releases all the way to the the enhanced editions. Also yes it made Dungeons & Dragons cool again.

By that time T$R had a pretty shabby reputation, so it's more like BG filled a vacuum.

You mean, cool for gamer types, and intellectual types, fantasy types, and so on…D&D isn't considered "cool" by the mainstream. There is still an "outcast and/or nerdy" aura going on around it, IMHO

Dungeons and Dragons has always been great, all the way up to the third edition. After that, I stopped buying the books.

5th Edition D&D is fantastic. Hope to see a computer game that is true to 5E rules sometime in the next few years.

Have you seen Joe Manganiello's D&D room in his old wine cellar? Do you know who he's married to? Let's see the coolest man in the world plays D&D. Oh, and I play D&D, so the second coolest person in the world plays ;)
