Default General News - The 2019 RPG of the Year @ Gamecrate

December 21st, 2019, 21:17
Gamecrate has chosen their RPG of the year 2019:

The 2019 RPG of the Year

In the dark cyberpunk future of 2019, everything is an RPG. Leveling systems and inventory management are a part of every game from NeoCab to Call of Duty. Devs attempt to weave powerful narratives into almost every single player experience. No game genre is harder to define than the RPG, so this list was particularly tough to compile.

The games below were chosen because their combination of story, setting, mechanics, and meaningful choice created memorable experience and pushed the genre forward as a whole. Some are spiritual successors while others are entirely new, borrowing mechanics from other genres - a reversal of the slow bleed of RPG leveling mechanics into everything. All of them are exciting additions to the most immersive genre in gaming.

It hurts my feelings when I see titles neverheard about among nominations.
Fire Emblem: The Three Houses? Kingdom Hearts 3?
WTF?

Not sure why is everyone tossing DE into RPG first category. It's more of adventure and VN than RPG.
But okay, at least I'm not seeing some mmo or coop like Outward taking the RPG crown so I'm not actually complaining on the top choice here!

Seeing Disco Elysium take the top caveat makes me only more eager to play it.

Every "RPG game of the year 2019" list I see makes me more glad we're leaving this terrible year behind. Thankfully RPGs is not all there is in life.

Yeah, pretty bad year for RPG’s. Not a great game among them imo. Sekiro will get my GOTY and I wont have an RPG of the year.

Having a huge backlog has really paid off this year.

Well I bought Disco Elysium yesterday on Steam Sale, basically because of the reviews. Not sure if I have any opinions on it yet, which is good, because then I can't inflict my opinions on people . Aside from this, Oh and this as well.

I could not get into Elysium, and stopped playing about 1/4 of the way through. Tired of clicking a gazillion times to get anywhere only to be told to 'come back tomorrow' for something, no edge scrolling, don't really care for the world, rambling conversations get old…

Music is great, though.

I believe those two games are only for the switch.

Sigh have to agree 2019 was bad year for RPGs in general but good for small indies.

Finally bought it also and agree. At least the audio and sound is exceptional.

It was the best times, it was the worst of times. I'm feeling optimistic for 2020.

I have to agree, this has been a down year, because I have played mostly strategy games this year. I think the newest crpg I played this year was PoE II with turn base and another play thru of Kingmaker.

I want to play Greedfall but waiting to get a new computer.

Not a great year. I don't think I played an RPG that actually came out this year.
And those few I would like to play at some point I definitely don't want to buy full price.

I agree on the crappy year for rpgs. Outer Worlds would likely win for me and I didn't even finish it. Greedfall was decent, but again I came no where close to finishing that one either. I personally played survival games more than rpgs again this year. SCUM, The Long Dark and Road to Eden all logged 60+ hours and a game called Solace Crafting won overall at 171 hours. Overall, it was a fun gaming year but I had to step outside of rpgs to get the most enjoyment.

I find that I get pickier each year on what I want from a game. First person is really important to me but I can live with over the shoulder views okay. Games that have more than one character are starting to fall by the wayside for me. I just don't finish any game that has party members. I think the last full party game I finished was NWN2

All in all, I was pretty satisfied with this years' offerings, computer-wise. Of course, the final two months I spent in Everquest, so perhaps that's a comment on new games not pulling me in as well, who knows. I do know that I've been playing many more newer games the past few years and far less time spent on replaying classics.

According to this site, and in speculation,

in 2016, 2017 was supposed to be awesome socalled RPGwise.
in 2017, 2018 was supposed to be awesome socalled RPGwise.
in 2018, 2019 was supposed to be awesome socalled RPGwise.

Every time, the same result. Another demonstration of speculating against things that are unlikely to happen.

Keeping up the trend:

in 2019, 2020 is going to be awesome socalled RPGwise.

Actually, I’d say 2016,17 and 18 were all excellent years. That’s part of the reason I have such a big backlog. It’s all subjective though.

Agreed, we’ve had a number of great years for RPGs, 2019 just wasn’t one of them. 2020 could be promising but it seems like many of the more interesting projects don’t have firm release dates yet and could be pushed back to 2021.

Well, you know it's a weak year when a point-and-click adventure game wins RPG of the year.
