Hey not to knock what you enjoy I just really don't like Anime. I knew it from very young tuning into Saturday morning cartoons that I'd never like it. Then suddenly; BOOM, all my friends were obsessed with anime. I much prefer the more typical fantasy trope. Conan,Dungeons & Dragons, Everquest, Frank Frazetta, The Wheel of Time; examples that illustrate the kind of art/universes I identify with.

Beyond the art-style of anime I am turned off by the expressions and mannerisms of the characters (for the most part). So it runs a bit deeper than just visual presentation. I'm hard pressed to find anything I like about it! With the exception being anime creatures/monsters. Lots of those do look wicked cool.

Any others relate with this general aversion?

Now on the opposite end of the spectrum, I adore many Asian/foreign live action films. It's just the animes.

Yep, me too. I just don't get why anime is so popular. It sucks. I hate just about everything about it.

1. Stop watching endless soaps.
2. Stop watching ecchi.
3. Stop watching harem.

Watch what's left. Profit.

Everquest, Frank Frazetta, The Wheel of Time

Been watching anime for over twenty years so I can understand why some people just don't like it. It's the same type of divide with JRPGs on both consoles and PC.

I can only understand people who after watching Pokemon and YuGiOh think that's what anime is. I'd hate it too.

Abandon mainstream already!

Yes, I can certainly relate. It's very much an acquired taste - and I never quite acquired it.

I do like some of it - mostly because it deals with a few concepts that I enjoy, including sci-fi.

But I find a lot of asian entertainment hella strange.

My sex drive is probably weak or something, but I'm also not terribly aroused by little school girls being violated by huge demon tentacled cocks - and what not.

To me, Hentai and Anime are products of a batshit insane culture - and it's clearly not created for people like me.

But a lot of people seem to like it - so I guess maybe I should be a little worried :)

Me neither. I do, however, love the music in anime. I also don't like JRPGs or most Japanese games (something about their design, I can't quite put my finger on it), but the music in some of them is absolute killer. J-Pop is one of my favorite genres of music.

Its true most Anime is a turn off. But there are some real gems for people who like to think and generally dislike Anime. Try Ergo Proxy. Dark story, excellent characters and no stupidity or panty shots. Just best of genre stuff.

I do think the weird fetish stuff surrounding anime contributes to my negative feeling about it. Some of that fetish anime stuff is so bizarre, and just too weird and creepy. And it does seem to have a pedophilia-type angle to some of it as well.

I also don't like or play Japanese rpgs, by the way. All that said, I like the Japanese culture, but the traditional stuff, the classic stuff, like their architecture. I think their design, like in the gardens and in architecture, such as how the houses and rooms are designed, is amazing.

Yeah, I have the same opinion of Japanese people as I do of all people.

Of course, that opinion isn't exactly positive :) But it's not necessarily negative either.

To me, we're all the same - and culture is just a bunch of random circumstances that might as well be a series of dice rolls. I'm not about to blame people for being born here instead of there.

But as for the culture itself, it's definitely weird.

I feel the same way about games as you do. Something about the asian "work ethic" seem to play a part in it.

It seems they think work for the sake of work is "honorable" in some way, and so many of their games are absolutely full of grind and repetition. To me, that's atrociously bad game design - but to each his own.

In that same way, I do get a little queasy at the typical American fantasy about being a super hero that "deserves" to be special and have "earned" the role of being the most important thing in the world - usually by singlehandedly defeating an army or two.

But I guess you could say I grew up with American entertainment - and so I'm conditioned to most of it.

And not trying to go off topic, but the Japanese have the weirdest fetish and sexual stuff in porn, I think, like that you can see on porn sites. The only other country who can match the Japanese in seemingly having no limits as far as porn is German women, and one time recently on-line, I made the same observation, and a guy replied and said it is because of what happened in World War II, not kidding. He further explained his theory that it's because the women in Germany were so traumatized or destroyed mentally, in other words, by the events in World War II, that they became "broken", in a way.

It is an interesting theory I have never heard before, but anyway. (in a way he was blaming me as an American too, since we destroyed Germany, that was part of his angle)

Anime and hentai are not the same thing. Just please don't turn this into codex thread - they believe all anime is Boku No Pico. It's not.

Lack of pubic hair in anime is because of the law. Don't tell me you believe characters with breasts bigger than their head are underaged girls just because no hair except on their head?

When it comes to actual porn, unlike other countries Japan censors genitals.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography_in_Japan
By Japanese law, any lawfully produced pornography must censor the genitals of actors and actresses and up until the mid-1990s so was the depiction of pubic hair. Anuses are only censored at contact or penetration. This type of censoring also extends to hentai comics, video games, and anime.

Tentacles fetish, if it ever really existed outside of a few old examples, became a common mockery.

Not liking hentai doesn't mean not liking anime. Again, put hentai aside and watch some quality anime before judging the whole of it. Most important - never ever watch anime with dubs. Go for original voiceover with subs. If you can't, just stay away from anime, please.

[EDIT]
Completely forgot. Yaoi/Yuri or BL/GL anime. It's unrealistic fantasy for specific type of people called fudanshi/fujoshi* who enjoy "dirty" stuff. Characters there exaggerate all the time, do not behave naturally and have all sorts of irrational emotions and impossible moods. Do not take that stuff seriously. If you stumble upon one and can't enjoy it because that type of theatrics is not your pair of shoes, just leave it be, don't judge all anime with only that stuff.
For example I can't stand harem anime although there are plenty fans of that genre. I just skippit and enjoy something that's fun to me.

-----------------------------------------------------------
* - Wouldn't surpirse me if the next Dart's thread about purpose of life is "are you fudanshi/fujoshi".

Hard to relate. Anime cover a very large spectrum of everything or anything. Even though narrower than manga.

Still too large to afford some kind of general aversion.

Oh boy, I already regret opening this Pandora's box…

I admit that I have no idea what "hentai" is, and all I know about anime is I don't like the art style or other aspects about it.

But joxer, there really is a weird subculture of pedophilia-like aspects around some of that stuff, what it is called precisely I don't know, maybe it goes by some of those weird names that you mentioned, but I do know that creepy weirdos like some of that crap. (And I'm not saying you are one of them! I'm just saying that it exists)

The other stuff you edited in to your post - I haven't a clue about either. Just accept that anime and the other sub-cultures that has various names also related to it, I just don't like it. And also that its not the end of the world, if I don't like something that you like, joxer!

Yea, sorry about that. Hentai means pervert, Yaoi/Yuri or BL/GL is boyslove/girlslove.

That aside, we have anime ongoing thread.
Not just me recommended plenty of titles there, usually with descriptions what different titles are about and why is it good or sometimes great:
https://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29745

Pick a genre (adventure, action, crime, horror, etc), then pick your poison there and give it a shot.
After that, return and tell us why exactly you couldn't stand a specific anime title some of us were very excited with. ;)
Just don't go for something you suspect won't be fun. For example if you don't want romances, avoid anime about some romance regardless of our recommendation.

Don't worry, joxer never really reads posts fully before he goes on his little crusades :)

You're lucky if he gets through half of it.

No one here said Hentai and Anime were the same thing. Hentai is essentially "animated porn" outside of Japan (which is where we are, I assume) and Anime is anything that's animated, but Hentai is considered a separate thing.

However, now we all know joxer's porn preferences ;)

Lived in Japan for a couple of years so let me enlighten you.

What your referring to is called Lolicon and Shota.

Also borderline R rated anime is simply called Ecchi with excessive fan-service.

I won't make any promises, but maybe I will if I get bored enough! (watch one of those anime movies)

I will also give a review if I get around to watching one. Pretty sure I will hate it though. :p

Thanks, had no idea. All these weird names! Hell, that is another reason I hate anime, there are too many weird names and categories involved in the whole subculture of it. Too confusing.
