The mystery adventure game Obduction got a big patch recently:

Patch 2 update Live!

Hey everyone!

The results from the public preview are looking pretty good, so today we're moving the newest version of the game from our Public Preview out to everyone.

Most players will see only good things with this patch. But we have noticed a rare occurance on some systems with integrated graphics - textures may get blurrier. This is the result of being safer about allocating texture memory, and the graphic system not reporting correctly. We’ll continue to investigate this.

Mac Kickstarter Backers on the Mac beta will see some changes - mostly good, some bad. Generally, the Mac performance has improved dramatically. Almost everyone should notice that. The bad news is that you may crash, or only see a black screen at startup. There are two steps to fix this. The first is to upgrade to MacOS Sierra which has fixes that Obduction requires. The second is to remove old shader cache files. Here are the steps to delete the old files:

  • Go to the Finder (usually the first thing in your dock)
  • Hold down shift + command + g
  • Type (or copy and paste) this... ~/Library/Application Support/Epic/Obduction/Saved
  • Click Go or push return
  • Delete two files... ByteCodeCache.ushadercode and DrawCache.ushadercache
(If you don’t see those files then you did something wrong, or you don’t have Obduction installed.) If you require further help with this, please create a support ticket at: http://support.cyan.com/

The list of changes and fixes from the Public Preview have stayed the same, but, if you missed them the first time around, here they are:

I tested this out for a few days. Jumps you right into a mystery where something really bad must have happened. Its not as compelling so far as Myst or Riven but it is more interesting than Uru.

I don't know if its the full 3D explorable world or maybe I am looking at it through filtered nostalgia. I suspect the real issue I have so far is it seems more a sci-fi than a surreal world. It does have that "humans were here but should not have been!"

This is the first game which shows I need to update my gfx card. Risen 3 plays on full extra ultra super HD with extended draw distance etc, while this one regularly drops to 2 FPS or even to a momentary freeze. It doesn't even look that good...

True story - I was freezing up right at the beginning with movement just crawling. I was constantly freezing up. I got a better GPU and I got a little farther but still issues.

So I installed a couple of extra fans and tried to cannibalize my old giant copper heatsync/fan combo. Who knew that AMD and Intel syncs weren't compatible? The fans helped a bit but I was getting reboots.

So everyone told me to get water cooling as a joke..so I did. I was shoving the radiator into my mini atx and I kept waiting for the snap pushing on this like I shouldn't. Long story short I started to see that magic blue smoke that runs my computer. And with the case off I couldn't keep the magic blue smoke. As everyone knows you can't let that magic blue smoke out of your computer or it will stop running. Very important stuff that magic blue smoke.

So I took it to my buddy's, the lab tech at Intel. One quick test and bam! it was the power supply. He told me to get AMD 8350 - it has 8 cores. So I went to Fry's picked that up and a giant case, a cheapy mb, and a couple new sticks of RAM - 24gb in total.

No go - even my buddy's power supply wasn't working. Well who knew that it only needed a four pin cable in an 8 cable slot?

So now Obduction runs really smooth. But nVidia is warning me now that my new MB isn't VR compatible. Boohoo.

Well that got it working

Good story!

I'm avoiding water cooling since in a friend's machine it all went wrong in the most spectacular way and it fried all the important inner bits ;)

What I really really dislike is the AA - TFAA (or TAA?). It seems to be the same as in Fallout 4. It's very good, except if you move - then the whole scenery goes blurry, others are OK with this, I absolutely dislike it.
I chose a cost/FPS intensive option; turn AA off and let it render at higher resolution and then rescale to my screen size. There's a slider in game UI, I've set it to 150, it's not a shooter, so… OK.
