Default Witcher - What if CD Projekt RED Remade it?

June 12th, 2021, 15:15
PCGamesN asks what if CD Projekt RED remade The Witcher and what would it look like?

There's also the game world. TW1 is far more like TW2 in that it doesn't feature a completely open world; instead, we've got world zones for each chapter and very little backtracking between them. It's probably expecting too much to add a full open world, not to mention the restructuring of the story that would be required to support one, and in any case the zonal system works pretty well for the game's opening and concluding chapters. You don't need a lot more choice, but what if there were a compromise for TW1's main chapters?

Vizima, across its different segments, hosts most of the game's chapters. It's the capital of Temeria - a fortified city nestled safely in the middle of a lake, and built on the foundations of an ancient elven settlement. This doesn't really come across in the original because of its small-scale zones, lifeless streets, and unremarkable landscape.

But what if Vizima opened up into one huge world space, with buildings that reflect Temeria's culture and history, and the opportunity to go dungeon-crawling through those elven ruins? What if we could travel through all of the city's regions (including Old Vizima and and the swampy areas beyond) without being hamstrung by loading screens or story progress? What if Vizima's simple streets were replaced by a labyrinthine network of passageways and shortcuts to explore, each packed with people from all walks of life?

No just no…stop with the remakes already.

Anyway first line says it all,"First things first, the sex cards have got to go."
Then, of course, there’s the romance. A Witcher remake would absolutely have to do away with the ‘sex cards’ system. This crass approach to romance is a far cry from The Witcher 3’s complex relationships, and essentially makes minor fetch quests – or just saying ‘hello’ at the right time – the only prerequisites to another night of passion for randy ol’ Geralt, with a pornographic trading card of each partner as a ‘reward’. You know, it’s not like keeping trophies gives off incredibly strong serial killer vibes or anything… totally normal behaviour, that.
The writer repeatedly mentions the game is sexist, and so forth to the point I shake my head, and wonder did the writer even play the second or third game?

Exactly. Why would they do that anyway?

Even if they went mad and did it, I wouldn't buy it, I was glad to play them a bit after they were initially released each, no need to come back on that. Let them do a proper remake of CP first

That as well they are stuck fixing Cyberpunk 2077, and starting work on it's expansions as well. Anyway it's well known Geralt is a man-whore in the books and games.

We also know CDPR are working on two more unannounced RPG games as well.

No need to remake the games at this time, all three are quite playable and seem to work well with older systems/operating platforms. Perhaps something to consider on each twenty-fifth anniversary, and toss in some new contest just to make the repurchase more worthy and enjoyable.

So I didn't mind the sex cards… *shrugs* It was unique.

I would play a sequel to the games, but not a remake or prequel.

I wouldn't play it, probably. Never was a fan of it, and it wasn't because of the combat alone. Rather they made a new game instead.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a remake. Witcher 1, while good, is so behind on the quality level from Witcher 2 and 3, that it's jarring when I want to replay it. The combat is very repetitive and samey, but even that is ok compared to the character models and some of the voice acting. It's nostalgic, but I'd also love a good quality remake. And it could sell pretty well, while only requiring 3/4 of the content to be remade. I'm sure parts can be salvaged from the old? Maybe. But I think it would sell very well, since Witcher hasn't been tainted yet.

But speaking of the remake, I wonder what they're gonna do with the next Witcher. And I wonder if enough of the people that worked on 2 and 3, are still there. Or if they are, if they're not overworked to hell, but manage to get the same level of creative juices flowing. We'll see. But somehow witcher 4, sounds kind of weird. So, maybe either a reboot focusing on another area or set of characters? It's wierd, even though I've not played Witcher 3 in ages, I still feel tired to get back into that universe. Maybe it's just me.

I don't dislike remakes as much as most of you seem to. That said in this case a true remake would be a bad idea IMO. The combat/game system is so different from the Witcher 3 that newer fans would not like it. It would feel like a step back.

Now, a re-imagining or a new game/prequel in the style of the Witcher 3 but loosely following the story of the first game? Personally I think that would be great.

omg, just dont.

The game is perfect, as it is, for what it is - a glorious, politically incorrect monster mash that is nothing but fun. It's a unique game. I love the combat, it's different and weird, but it flows really nice for me just like it is. Witcher 2 was a big step backward in many ways, thematically, combat-wise, characters were freakin dull. I just did not like it very much.

it's funny because I really had no interest in the game at first, but all the cool kids were playing it, so I gave it a shot and it became one of my all time faves. It can only go down, from there

Gaming press seems to have slow news time. Not only, that there is no need to remake the game, there is even no need to ask the question.

I also like it for all those reasons. But I see nothing wrong with having both the original, and a high quality remake

I kind of wonder if all the bad PR from CyberPunk will push them back to the Witcher world to win back some love even if that was not where they wanted to go next.

Add me to the list of "no."

I only somewhat enjoyed Witcher 1. I finished it so that is good but it was only decent.
I only somewhat enjoyed Witcher 2 and didn't get past the probably-midway point, and I told myself that I wouldn't buy another Witcher game again. Fortunately, I changed my mind once Witcher 3 received such great reviews, because Witcher 3 was great (although it's the only good game which I have never replayed).

I liked Cyberpunk 2077 a whole lot, and hope that CDPR continues to focus on new single-player epic games.

There's going to be a hyper-critical spotlight on whatever they do release next. They might actually want to dissipate that with something else or they run the risk of releasing a Witcher game, watching it torn to shreds because people smell blood and love to do that, and then they'll have nothing.

Great game, shit article.

The Witcher is fantastic and still holds up well today. It's amazing what they did with the Aurora Engine for that game. The soundtrack is also one of my all-time favorites.

I wouldn't mind a new Witcher game with a different protagonist. Just don't make us play as Ciri.

They really need to work on a new loot system though. The systems in both TW3 and Cyberpunk were terrible. There was way too much loot, especially weapons, and everything felt so randomly placed. It diminished the quality of the exploration in those games.

I'd almost rather see a prelude game. How did the character get to this point? As I understand it, Witcher picks up right after the final book in the series.
